The Empire That Built Your World (and Set It on Fire)You may have slept through history class, but Rome has been shaping your life this whole time.

The alphabet you’re reading right now? Built on Latin. Your calendar? Roman. Your laws, your government buildings, and your favorite dramas packed with power plays and betrayal? They all carry echoes of a civilization that never really died.

This is not another dusty textbook or a glorified list of emperors. It is a fast-paced, brutally honest ride through 1,200 years of violence, innovation, chaos, and unlikely survival. Whether you’re brand-new to history or simply curious how one muddy hilltop city became the blueprint for Western civilization, this book gives you everything you need to know, without the boredom.

Inside, you’ll discover:

The savage myth behind Rome’s founding (spoiler: fratricide and wolf’s milk).

How seven kings led to a thousand years of a republic and an empire.

Why Roman roads, laws, and architecture still shape your life today.

Gladiators, aqueducts, emperors, and absurdly dramatic politics.

The dirty, brilliant truth of how an empire rises—and how it falls.

And so much more!

Forget boring dates and dead names. This is Rome as it was: messy, terrifying, impressive, and deeply human.

Once you see Rome, you can’t unsee it. And once you understand it, you’ll never look at the modern world the same way again.

I really enjoyed how this audiobook mixed the legend of Romulus and Remus with the real history behind early Rome. It explains the myths in a fun and dramatic way while also showing how historians and archaeologists believe the city actually developed over time. The writing keeps history interesting and easy to follow without feeling too complicated. Overall, it’s an informative and engaging look at how one of the world’s greatest civilizations began.

This audible book delivers exactly what it advertises. The performance, I, personally, found rather boring and monotonous. There is t much expression in the readers voice. It’s just the facts. It’s as if someone is reading a history book to you. I didn’t find it very exciting but it was exactly what y advertised to be, so, if that’s what you’re looking for, it can be found here.

This is an entertaining take on the roman empire it did a great job connecting roman politics, culture, and innovations to the modern world. I have always had an interest in the roman empire and how it came about! This is a perfect beginner friendly introduction. Most of what our society consists of has some familiarity to the roman empire so it was nice to know that our calendar comes from the romans!

good intro about the roman empire!

This was a very easy listen. The by-line in the title tells you everything: The Story of the Roman Empire Simplified for People who Slept Through HIstory Class. This was a super approachable way to get back into history. I'm not much of a historical reader, but listening to this made it entertaining. I didn't get confused with too many names or dates like I used to in history class. My 14-year old is also listening to it and is enjoying it.
