Summary

You can’t outrun your past. If you try, it will chase after you in a silver DeLorean.

The last thing Anika Singh wants is to go home to Ohio, but when her mother is diagnosed with cancer, what choice does she really have? She’ll go home if she has to, but she won’t stay long. Because all Marcine, Ohio, has for Anika is bad memories - memories of being an outcast, even within her own family, and memories of a perfect love that was soured by betrayal.

Jenny’s betrayal. Anika’s high school sweetheart turned ex-wife. Anika hopes she won’t run into Jenny...or maybe she hopes she will run into her. It’s hard to say.

Then there’s Amy, a dark-haired beauty Anika meets on the flight to Cleveland, who happens to be in Marcine for a friend’s wedding. Nothing serious can happen with Amy; she’s only going to be in town for a week. Which means that falling for her would be stupid, especially given the fact that Jenny might be available again.

But Anika is famous for doing stupid things.

A story flavored with curry and cornbread, family drama, and a whole lot of f-bombs, Anika Takes the Long Way Home up Soul Mountain will have you laughing, crying, and grimacing as Anika gets chased around by a silver DeLorean and attempts to answer the age-old question: Can you ever really go home again?

Part of the Rosemont Duology: This is the second book in the Rosemont Duology, following up from To Have Loved & Lost. However, Anika Takes the Long Way Home up Soul Mountain can also be enjoyed as a standalone novel. This lesbian romance is rated R for:

  • A lot of really bad language
  • Sexual content
  • Adult situations

Eliza Andrews is just brilliant... She is so honest and leaves no prisoners. I'm guessing I'm a similar age to her, and this shows to me... She has a meloncoly that comes with having lived a few decades... And this book's use of looking back at your life is so powerful and familiar. But, it is also hopeful and joyous too... This book is beautifully written and well plotted... she knows her craft... I loved this... The author's note is also very moving... Thanks Eliza!
The reader is also excellent!

Moving, honest, tragic, funny, Eliza at her best

I related to the first book and thought this one would be great too...and I was right! Andrews takes you all the way through a path that, if you're patient and willing, will also help guide you through your own crap (if you're going thru any, that is...I know I am and appreciated all insights I got out of it).

This isn't a light book to read just to pass the time...it's deep, sometimes dark and sad, but also truthful, honest and reliable in the kind of feelings and emotions you know you should experience from each and every situation described, and Andrews doesn't disappoint: both the punches to the gut and the overwhelming joyful moments happen exactly when they make sense in the storyline, they make you want to bite your nails in anticipation and anxiety, and at the same time feel like hugging the characters for finally doing sth 'right', making up their minds or simply apologizing.
Anyways, it was quite a ride.
The narrator's pitch and tone remides me too much of Lorry Prince's tbh, and that threw me off a bit, but all in all I would still listen to this audiobook again before picking up a paper copy. Thanks, E. Andrews!

Great story, realistic but hopeful
