Summary

There has been a disturbing rise in antisemitism in Europe over the last fifteen years or so, with violent attacks on Jewish targets, increased verbal antisemitism, and an acceptability in many circles of what would hitherto have been condemned as outrageous antisemitic discourse. More recently, the Labour party have come under fire for engaging in antisemitic abuse. Yet despite the dramatic increase in debate and discussion around antisemitism, there is a general sense of confusion about what should and shouldn't be defined as antisemitism - and particularly around criticism of the State of Israel.

In this urgently needed book, Rabbi Julia Neuberger uses contemporary examples, along with historical context, to unpack what constitutes antisemitism, building a powerful argument for why it is so crucial that we come to a shared understanding now, and exploring ways of dealing with it.

I enjoyed this it was a nice balanced read I wanted to gain more insight following this being in the news in the British Labour Party and wanted to gain a better understanding on the subject.

listening to Julia read the book added to its message. Although very much describing antisemitism and the ways it still exists and is on the rise Julia also correlates the attitudes towards Jews can be seen in others. I wonder what a new chapter would be like given the current state of the world since this book was first published?

Thought Provoking

Overall very balanced, but understates and underplays Palestinian murders; also, legally, Israel has no right of self-defence to freedom fighters, as they are an occupying force in both Gaza and the West Bank.

Overall very balanced with reservations

Julia Neuberger is a well known and well respected speaker in the UK, and it is helpful to hear her views on the reemergence of antisemitism in Britain and elsewhere. I was more convinced by her description of antisemitism within the Labour Party than by the proclamations in the right wing tabloid press, who have a long history of anti-Jewish headlines and seemed to me more determined to prevent the election of a Labour government than to support British Jews.
Julia Neuberger is fair minded and balanced in her discussion of the reappearance of a vile prejudice in the 21st century.

An eminent English rabbi’s perspective on antisemitism

I hadn't realised the extent of anti semitism across continental Europe. Neither had I properly appreciated the extent to which anti semitism had infected the Labour Party under Mr Corbyn. Frightening.

Essential Listening.
