About this listen

The long-awaited, enormously entertaining memoir by one of the great artists of our time.

In this candid and often hilarious memoir, the celebrated director, comedian, writer, and actor offers a comprehensive, personal look at his tumultuous life. Beginning with his Brooklyn childhood and his stint as a writer for the Sid Caesar variety show in the early days of television, working alongside comedy greats, Allen tells of his difficult early days doing standup before he achieved recognition and success. With his unique storytelling pizzazz, he recounts his departure into moviemaking, with such slapstick comedies as Take the Money and Run, and revisits his entire 60-year-long and enormously productive career as a writer and director, from his classics Annie Hall, Manhattan, and Hannah and Her Sisters to his most recent films, including Midnight in Paris. Along the way, he discusses his marriages, his romances, and his famous friendships, his jazz playing, and his books and plays. We learn about his demons, his mistakes, his successes, and those he loved, worked with, and learned from in equal measure.

This is a hugely entertaining, deeply honest, rich and brilliant self-portrait of a celebrated artist who is ranked among the greatest filmmakers of our time.

The gold here is that Woody narrates his own text, so you're having it read to you as it is meant to be read and you're getting the treat of the Woodman's Brooklyn brogue throughout.

Where you fall on the various controversies surrounding Woody is up to you, of course - I admire the guy and I know what I want to believe, and certainly he puts forward a compelling argument in his defence. If nothing else then you would certainly be persuaded to be on the opposite side of the road when Mia Farrow's walking down it!

Beyond that is the enormous body of work, the seemingly endless string of movies that may only be drying up now as a consequence of the #MeToo fallout. Woody talks at good length about his experiences of breaking into the business and covers most of his pictures at some depth. There's an endearing bewilderment at his own success, a modesty that cascades into the traditional self-depreciating humour that peppers the book. Woody's a funny man, and there were various moments listening to this when I was fortunate for the lockdown as I could laugh openly without any sense of worry over doing so in public.

Best of all, like his films Woody doesn't outstay his welcome. There's the potential for a 40-hour listen, given the length of his career, the sheer number of anecdotes, the length of time he could spend listing his grievances... Instead it's not even a third of that running time. His gift for brevity extends to the autobiography he's presenting here, not before time and no doubt long awaited. It's a breezy and essential piece of work.

His Master's Voice

Fantastic, funny and interesting. Many crowd followers, probably me included should read this account and feel shame. I will not jump on the bandwagon in future and look more closely and believe a bit less at headlines. Really good listen. One I got over the strong New York accent and delivery, as an Englishwoman, I loved it.

Woody Allen is innocent.

I really enjoyed listening to Woody talk about his standup career, his childhood, and how he got started in movies.

A large chunk of the book is devoted to the accusations made him against him (investigated and found to be without basis), which is a shame but it's understandable he would want to tell his side of the story. This part is a compelling listen but in a different way.

His voice sounds old obviously but the wit is fully present. Highly recommended.

Telling his side of the story

If you’re a fan of Woody Allen and his work I think you’ll really appreciate and enjoy Apropos of nothing. And if your opinion of him is solely based on the accusations, this will be a good way to clear things up.

Great book

First of all its a good listen, Mr Allen comes across sincere and very likeable. I found the information about his early life very interesting and it doesn't often fall into the 'name dropping ' trap. I didn't know much about the 'allegations' made against him, although a lot of people have jumped on a bandwagon without the 'facts' and decided he's guilty. Read his side of the story, its definitely very compelling. Whats interesting is he never really 'bad mouths' anyone, this isn't a book about revenge, he actually comes across very positive after everything that's happened. I really enjoyed the book and will be interested to see what happens next.

Read it! Don't judge a book by its...etc
