About this listen
The Battle of Kursk, fought from July 5 to August 23, 1943, was a decisive World War II confrontation between the German Wehrmacht and the Soviet Red Army. The battle took place near the city of Kursk in western Russia. It involved the largest tank engagement in history, and marked a turning point in the Eastern Front.
The German offensive aimed to eliminate a Soviet salient, but the Soviets had meticulously prepared defensive positions. The battle witnessed intense tank duels, massive artillery barrages, and fierce infantry clashes. Ultimately, the Soviets repelled the German forces, inflicting heavy losses and setting the stage for the Soviet advance.
