Who knew art could be so theraputic! It makes sense if you think about it, creativity is actually a response to trauma, some of the most famous artists and writers had some messed up stuff happen to them, so it’s no wonder art has the power to heal. After trying the advice and tips in here, I find it to help more than other modalities I’ve used and tried.

Works!

My daughter has recently been facing a lot of anxiety and depression. She is in her senior year of high school and seems to be stressing about what life would be like after high school. She has always struggled with school so she's had an amazing support system and structure that is gone once she graduates. She has been displaying behaviors this year that we have never seen and quite frankly didn't know what to do. We now have a therapist and the therapist suggested Art Therapy. She loves art and has been coloring a lot lately but she was also getting very bored of that. What is nice about art therapy is the sky is the limit for what they can draw to help themselves through difficult times. So for instance the book will suggest drawing a manadalin. You don't need any materials for it and the goal is that as you draw and focus on the meticulous details, you are able to decompress and destress.

All of the drawing ideas are centered around promoting self-care, self-compassion, mindfulness, stress and anxiety management, and many more things. The book is here to provide ideas of what they could draw and encourage them along the way. She has been doing this over the last few days and I can see that this has now become a great outlet for her emotions and she has been really proud of her most recent drawings. She also struggles with ADHD so being able to sit down and focus long enough has always been difficult for her but having a book that is prompting her to draw and guiding her has been really helpful.
