About this listen

At the Mountains of Madness tells the first-person tale of geologist William Dyer, a professor from Miskatonic University in the USA. He writes to disclose hitherto unknown and closely kept secrets in the hope that he can deter a planned and much publicized scientific expedition to Antarctica. For he has been there and seen the unimaginable horrors that lay beyond the mountains.

At the Mountains of Madness was written by HP Lovecraft in 1931, originally a serialised story published in Astounding Stories magazine in the US. While considered by fans to be part of the Cthulhu Mythos stories that HPL is most famous for, some academics argue that the author was actually ‘demythologising’ much of his earlier work.

Whichever it is, the story is massively popular, and there are talks of a movie adaptation by Steven Spielberg and Guillermo Del Toro in the offing. This 2010 adaptation comprises 5 episodes, originally aired on BBC Radio 4 Extra, and offered here in exclusive Extended Editions.

An Anarchic horror with a mass of Cthulu myths to digest. This is one of my favourite stories by HP Lovecraft, and Richard Coyle's narration is excellent.

Classic HP Lovecraft

Lovecraft at his creepy best... Here you can read/hear the massive influence his writing exerts on modern horror/science fiction ... Read this and then watch Carpenter's "The Thing".. Or "Alien Vs Predator" or any one of those series... Loads of others of course.... Brilliant.

Baroque... Creepy.... Arch!

'At the mountains of madness' is Lovecraft at his best, a classic story of Antarctic exploration and the horrors lying in the ice. Very much a period piece, highly atmospheric, and less floridly gothic than much of Lovecraft's work with a real uneasy atmosphere of tension as the secrets of an unbearably ancient city are slowly revealed.

Coyle reads the story brilliantly well. His voice is perfect for Lovecraft's work and he gets every last nuance of dread out of it without melodrama.

If you like Lovecraft, you'll love this.

This is Lovecraft in science fiction rather than horror mode, though some passages are unpleasant enough. Not his finest work, though it has echoes of Poe and Jules Verne. It is ably performed by Richard Coyle, who contributes greatly to the atmosphere of the piece. Many reviewers have found fault with the near-constant music in this performance, but I didn't find it distracting or over-loud. This is one of the more professional Lovecraft recordings on Audible and is well worth hearing.

Atmospheric – music not an issue

This is by far the best audiobook version of this story ive listened to and there are some out there. The narrator really captures the mystery feel and takes the reader through the best forbidden archeology story that started them all. If you never read the book but love south pole mysteries this is for you. If youre a fan of the book youll love this.
A story that clearly inspired john carpenter or john campbell for The Thing too. Brilliant.

Great read of a classic.
