Summary

Gray Nolan's biggest problem in life was the torch he carried for his closeted coach. He was just another happy-go-lucky dude, a college student and hockey player, when his ordinary existence was interrupted, and he became a human trafficking statistic.

He and seven other young men were taken aboard a luxurious yacht where they were to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. Gray was beaten, shattered, and almost defeated by the time his buyer stepped out of the shadows in a swirl of his own cigarette smoke.

He was Gray's new owner.

Darius Quinn had vowed never again to find himself in a situation like this. His days as a private military contractor were over. No more missions, no more risks, no more personal attachments. Yet, here he was, after weeks of searching, face-to-face with his broken prize.

It was time to get the knucklehead back to his family. Quick and easy was Darius's plan. Then everything went sideways.

I wasn't sure about this book/audio it's horrific what the main character Gray and the others go through. However, the story and pace alongside the narration kept me reading/listening.

Interesting Read

The story is fantastic—well paced, emotionally hard-hitting, and filled with characters who could easily have been two-dimensional (as they often are in books with similar themes), but absolutely aren’t. As the opening to a series, it takes its time rather than rushing, and that patience pays off. Everything exists in shades of grey, and you’re left genuinely on edge, wanting more.

My one major gripe—and I don’t think this is the narrator’s fault—is the playback speed. It’s been slowed down to the point that he sounds like a drugged sloth. Bump it up to 1.3x and it becomes a completely different experience: natural, engaging, and well-paced. The fact that it works so perfectly at that speed suggests the original recording was altered for reasons I can’t fathom.

That said, the narrator himself isn’t bad at all, and the next narrator in the series is even better.

This was an intense read compared to some of the other books I’ve read by this author. It’s definitely dark and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I also love the characters, and can’t wait to see how this story progresses in the next books.

Also the audio performance was top quality- though the narrator really brought the story to life.

Loved it - highly recommend

A surprising dive out into the sickening and cruel world of modern slave trade and human trafficking.

I didn't expect to get this invested so soon. Take the CW seriously.

Set the narration speed to min. 1.14, this made it bearable to listen to... I was "this close" to abandon this title due to the narrator... But in the end, i was glad i didn't, its a strong story ( but not all that explicit, unless you are very faint hearted or don't know the genre) strong, fairly well-written story... For me personally it could have gone darker and gained the last star... The darkness is absolutely there, it's a dark genre... But not completely "in your face"
I will give book 2 a try.

Strong story
