Summary

The definitive guide for parents of autisic children, written from the perspective of neurodiversity.

Written by Jessie Hewitson, an award-winning journalist at The Times, Autism is the book she wishes she had read when her son was first given the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder.

It combines her own experiences with tips from autistic adults, other parents - including author David Mitchell - as well as advice from autism professionals and academics such as Professor Simon Baron-Cohen. Autism looks at the condition as a difference rather than a disorder and includes guidance on:

  • What to do if you think your child is autistic
  • How to understand and support your child at school and at home
  • Mental health and autism
  • The differences between autistic girls and boys

Critic reviews

"A wise SatNav for what is often a bewildering, or even scary, zone of parenting. The book offers real-world, road-tested, child-first and family-friendly advice; while also highlighting the twin truths that autism is not a tragedy, and that adaptation and acceptance are not resignation." (David Mitchell, best-selling author and co-translator of The Reason I Jump)

"Jessie Hewitson has really hit the mark with this book, giving our history, our diversity, our challenges and our hopes. Autistic people and their families are finally represented." (Carrie Grant)

"Exceptionally useful and informative." (Uta Frith, Emeritus Professor of Cognitive Development, UCL)

This book is very well researched. Jessie covers autism in its various forms and gives the listener a comprehensive insight into the condition. Her advice for parents of autistic children is brilliant throughout.

I would strongly recommend purchasing this as in book form listening to it on audible is is well narrated but too many web addresses and things you need to make a note of obscures the enjoyment of the listen. Having lived autism for 8 years now I don't think I have learnt much from this book. the author has got it right by referring to experienced described by individuals on the spectrum. what happens later on though, is that the practical approaches are very geared towards verbal autism and leaves little room for the spectrum approach. Also she is a little fixated on routine and this can be great for some but as my husband says (being on the spectrum also) routine is comfortable but it creates a prison and he wishes that someone would teach him how to deal with stuff without creating ridgid routines. this is what we are doing with our son and for him it works wonderfully. it is about pushing gently and kindly and knowing when to make the next move. I other words use this book as it is good, but make adaptions and don't assume that even the "essentials" are essential to you child. Happy autism journey ! :-)
