John and Sylvia are desperately in love with the same man. Three days before VE Day, that man is shot out of the sky, leaving them shattered and clinging to one another. Fulfilling a promise he made to Nicky in the trenches, John marries Sylvia so her baby will not be born out of wedlock.
As their unconventional marriage progresses, John begins to fall in love again: with the baby that will call him Daddy...and maybe, somehow, the woman carrying it.
Before husband or wife can discern what any of their feelings mean, the man who brought them together makes a miraculous reappearance. Hurt and confused by John and Sylvia’s arrangement, and changed by shell-shock, Nicky struggles with many conflicting feelings.
