Why are states so bad at lethal injection?

There are the moral arguments and debates on capital punishment itself, its effectiveness in deterrence and the ethics of state-sanctioned executions.

But interwoven into those debates are the methods of capital punishment, particularly lethal injection. What has long been presented as a clean, non-violent process has in fact proven to be the opposite.

Professor Corinna Lain of the University of Richmond School of Law has written a critical analysis, after seven years of research and first-hand documentation, called "Secrets of the Killing State: The Untold Story of Lethal Injection." She joins us today to discuss her findings, and you'll be shocked to learn what really happens.

From hiding disturbing reactions to paralysis, to improperly measured dosages, black market sourcing of drugs by state officials, relying on unlicensed doctors, and more, it is remarkable the lengths the state will go to to perform lethal injections.

Which makes us ask, why does it happen this way, and how did we get here?

"They're pushing this huge rock of Sisyphus uphill. Why? I don't even get it. The only conclusion I can come to is that lethal injection just does one thing well. Only one thing. And that is it hides state violence." - Professor Corinna Lain

In this episode, we discuss:

◼️ How lethal injection procedures are often flawed and inhumane.
◼️ That the violence of execution methods is often hidden from public view.
◼️ Why the death penalty itself does not effectively deter crime.
◼️ How victims' families often find that executions do not provide the closure they expect.
◼️ That research and data are often lacking in lethal injection protocols.
◼️ Why public awareness of the realities of the death penalty is crucial for informed discourse.
