About this listen

A heart wrenching and inspiring World War Two saga of friendship, courage and love in the face of danger! Perfect for fans of Rosie Goodwin and Jean Fullerton.

With the men still away fighting, the women keep the home fires burning - some more than others…

Bristol 1942

Following the death of her controlling husband, Margaret Routledge is no longer the downtrodden church mouse she once was. Now she’s the talk of the Close, frequenting seedy pubs and clubs where men gather to pick up good-time girls. It seems Margaret is past redemption until she sees neighbour Jenny Crawford’s headstrong 16-year-old daughter Gloria on the arm of a man of ill repute, and her motherly instincts return.

By contrast, Jenny's eldest, land girl Tilly, has a heart of gold, but trouble brews when she helps a vulnerable mother and child with a dangerous past.

A wayward daughter only adds fire to Jenny’s personal problems, which she chooses to keep to herself in the hope that they will go away.

Meanwhile, Thelma Dawson has landed herself a promotion, but will it conflict with her ongoing romance with Peter van Luntzen – and where is he? Will he come back and make good on his promise?

As good as the rest. Enjoy it

Again, this narrator has been substituted for Anne Dover and it doesn't work. I've listened to another series where this has happened and it really spoils my enjoyment. Unfortunately, I find that this narrator lacks any warmth or sufficient variety of tone. The character accents are not the same and in some cases, over exaggerated, and it's difficult to absorb yourself in a story and stay interested. I'd much rather have waited for a few more months to ensure continuity of narration. I'm not even halfway through this book and I'm losing interest because of this. Such a shame, as I was enjoying this series up until now.

Change of narrator spoiled this

Not as good as the previous books….didn’t have me hooked.
Didn’t like the narrators male voices, no matter what age they were supposed to be they all sounded like dirty old men.

Thx story

I've loved the previous books, and was waiting for this one, but the new narrator spoiled it for me. To be fair, she's probably a lot more authentic for Knowle West, I'm sure! But I loved Anne Dover, and the characters belonged to her.
There were also some inconsistencies, and unbelievable character changes - Robin's surname was wrong and he and several others seem to have had personality transplants.
Finally, it doesn't really conclude very satisfactorily - it's a bit odd, if I'm honest! - so if it's meant to be a cliffhanger, please can we have our old characters back, in the next one, as well as our old narrator.

What a Shame!

Absolutely brilliant! Loved this new edition to Coronation Close. The narrator Penelope Freeman has the gift of bringing each character to life. You certainly know who is who. This story is now only read. It’s performed to perfection. Thank you Lizzie Lane. Hopefully you will use this narrator for more of your books.

Fantastic!
