Summary
A slow-burn queer romance about the complicated beauty of rebuilding your life from the middle.
When ex-Olympian Jamie Lyons walked away from the gymnastics world, it wasn’t by choice, but by a tragic diagnosis that solidified her decision to disappear from the public eye. For seven years, she’s kept her distance from the spotlight and stayed far from the headlines that once defined her. Now, as a favor to an old friend, Jamie is back, and a chance encounter at a party sets off a series of events that makes her question everything. When the life she left behind starts to blur with the one she’s creating, Jamie must decide if she’s finally ready to stop running.
Beth Walsh is no stranger to heartbreak. After her marriage fell apart, she’s spent years piecing herself back together while raising her daughter, Lily—a fiercely driven, sometimes turbulent teenager. Now, after a year-long national art tour, Beth has returned, determined to find her footing again and figure out what happiness looks like for her. But when her path crosses with an alluring stranger, everything she thought she knew is flipped upside down. Beth finds herself navigating the delicate balance between life, love, and being a parent, while caught between the future she’s building and the past she’s never quite been able to let go of.
With love, ambition, and identity colliding at full force, Balancing Act is a rich, emotional story about letting go, holding on, and finding your footing when everything feels like it’s shifting beneath you.

I adored the storyline, the characters and the relationships between them. God this book had me sobbing!! The emotions 😭 it was so so well written and Quinn’s Narration just perfectly added to it!

True or False...
This debut made me fall in love.
DAMN! True!
There is so much I could say about this story, but you know... spoilers! So I’ll behave.
The sheer heart, nuance, tenderness, humour, pride and all the very best things that make a low stakes, slow burn Sapphic romance.
Balancing Act has it in spades!
The energy between Beth and Jamie from their first meeting is so charged, the mutual attraction and flirting is just *Chefs kiss*
It made falling into this world all too easy!
It’s clear that Beth isn’t used to going for what she wants, when it comes to love anyway, so when she gives herself permission to have this unexpected moment with Jamie, it adds a catharsis that just enrichens the whole thing... before they’re interrupted.
The cast are all fantastic in their own way and we’re treated to a little bit of everything; A lovable-pushy best friend, ex wife, ex-friend/love interests/coach rival and encouraging colleagues who push boundaries... but the side character who shines most for me is Lily, Beth’s daughter.
Jamie and Lily’s bond over gymnastics really touched my heart, and the way they interact shows exactly the type of person Jamie is.
I hope Lily gets her own story at some point! She’s honest, bold and blunt, maybe a little too blunt (pffft... never)
Jamie’s quiet confidence and experience not only bring out Lily’s strengths, but bring Beth out of her shell too, with every thoughtful, encouraging, and considerate gesture between them, they blur the lines between professional and personal every time they meet, which just makes you want root for them all the more.
But of course, not everything is perfect.
Beth is stuck in a rut of falling into old patterns, and Jamie’s way of dealing with her problems is to run away from them, quite literally.
And neither are talking about it.
With Beth at her side, as a resilient yet comforting anchor, she gives Jamie the space and safety to truly deal with the cards she’s been dealt, and Jamie brings colour and passion back into Beth’s life.
The way Cass Morgan navigates the all too real human reactions of fear, insecurity, and the way they change our behaviour, even towards those we love, is masterful.
My heart was breaking from sheer understanding alone.
Such a great debut!
I look forward to seeing what else Cass brings our way in 2026!
The Queen has done it again!
Quinn Riley.
Eventually, that’s all I’m going to have to say, and I’ll get so many responses of “Yeah, totally smashed it!”
Because she always brings it!
Every breath, every hitch, every single tone shift, age shift, it’s a masterpiece in storytelling.
I’m always in safe hands whenever Quinn’s voice is in my head. And with the number of female characters in this book, each of them were distinctive enough I didn’t get lost. Which says something.
Absolutely loved it.
What a debut!! Amazing from start to finish!
