Summary

Three years ago, Bear McKenna’s mother took off for parts unknown with her new boyfriend, leaving Bear to raise his six-year-old brother Tyson, aka the Kid. Somehow they’ve muddled through, but since he’s totally devoted to the Kid, Bear isn’t actually doing much living. With a few exceptions, he’s retreated from the world, and he’s mostly okay with that - until Otter comes home.

Otter is Bear’s best friend’s older brother, and as they’ve done for their whole lives, Bear and Otter crash and collide in ways neither expect. This time, though, there’s nowhere to run from the depth of emotion between them. Bear still believes his place is as the Kid’s guardian, but he can’t help thinking there could be something more for him in the world ... something or someone.

Read them. Read them all. And get lost in the characters who couldn’t be more real. These books tug on me in a way no others ever have. I just love them.

The BEST book series EVER

I love TJ Klune books. This is one of my favourites Otter is so lovable and Bear is so funny not to mention the Kid. this story is so real a teenager giving up his future to look after his little adorable brother. I hope you all fall in love with this story it's well worth the listen.

Bear is so relatable

I didn’t know this book existed until it was randomly recommended to me and, honestly, I loved every second of it. The characters are fleshed out, it has that awesome feel good vibe and the narrator does such a fantastic job highlighting it, it’s not lascivious in nature for being a gay romance novel, not that I mind but variety is the spice of life and my favourite part is that even though I don’t personally see anything groundbreaking in the story it all just works!

Apart from one small instance where I find it a bit of a stretch, everything is entirely believable and even that instance fits the character so it makes sense.
It’s the kind of story you can get lost in. Everything is relatable to some degree and because the characters are so clearly defined it sweeps you up and wraps you in a big blank of love, found family and that feeling I think resonates with most people, but particularly queer folk, of finding yourself in places you didn’t know existed.

I love books like this exactly because it blends the romance genre and reality in a realistic way and I can’t wait to read the next one. It’s also not overly political, but I imagine that’s just because it’s an older book.

Thank you TJ I’ve read your books in the wrong order, but luckily I get to partially remedy that. I hope to see more like this in the future.

Cliché done right!
