A Warhammer 40,000 Audio Anthology

It is the thirty-second millennium and an ork invasion of unparalleled scale has thrown the Imperium into scrambled action and disarray. Worlds burn, renowned Space Marine Chapters are destroyed, and now an ork attack moon looms large and threatening over Terra itself – can the beleaguered Imperial forces stave off this sudden and brutal assault?

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

Black Library's epic The Beast Arises saga continues! Discover what happens as Imperial space is further invaded and even the sacred Throneworld of Terra itself is assaulted directly by a seemingly unending tide of terrifying ork forces appearing from within, and without.

THE STORIES

The Last Wall

As an ork attack moon gazes down at the Imperial Palace, terrified citizens run riot in the streets. In a last-ditch attempt to destroy the attack moon, a proletarian crusade is launched. Thousands of ships large and small head to the moon carrying billions of citizens, all eager to take the fight to the enemy. It seems the attack has a chance of success as the invasion force lands safely, but the orks have yet to spring their trap...

Written by David Annandale. Narrated by Gareth Armstrong.

Running time 5 hours and 40 minutes approx.

Throneworld

The Imperium’s situation has never been more grim – Terra is under assault, and ork armadas ravage human space. To make matters even worse, aeldari forces strike at the heart of the Imperial Palace, forcing humanity’s defenders to fight on two fronts at once. Though it seems nothing can stop the orks – neither brute force, science, nor faith – an unlikely alliance in the furthest reaches of space may have uncovered the first clue as to how to defeat them. The Adeptus Astartes now face an almost impossible task – taking news of this discovery back to Terra through a galaxy teeming with orks.

Written by Guy Haley. Narrated by Gareth Armstrong.

Running time 6 hours and 34 minutes approx.

Echoes of the Long War

Paralysed by the continued ork invasion of Imperial space, the rulers of Terra continue to fight among themselves. Finally losing patience with the High Council, Koorland – the last surviving Imperial Fist – ousts the Lord Commander and seizes control. Elsewhere, the Fists Exemplar are forced by circumstance to fight alongside the Iron Warriors. Where will such an alliance lead – can a Traitor Legion ever be trusted?

Written by David Guymer. Narrated by Gareth Armstrong.

Running time 6 hours and 23 minutes approx.

I don’t think the first three books were good. But at least they seemed to build towards something. After listening these three, I feel like that something has devolved in to a mush that lacks coherensy. There are interesting things here, but they will fade in and out as you move from one book to the next.

If the only point is that these events happened, and the authors can’t figure out collectively why the reader/listener should care for each one, then they do not deserve any depth of exploration. Clearly this depth was mandated from the authors, and they all went their separate ways to fill the void they were given.

If the authors do their best, this results in inconsistent overall narrative where the focus shifts between themes and characters. But what is worse is that I don’t think the authors did try their best, and their effort was inconsistent within the same book.

To enjoy this collection, it is best to view the feeling of not caring about some parts of it as a blessing. Without that lack of care, you the listener/reader might be the only one who actually does care, and I can’t imagine a listening experience much worse than that.

Inconsistent mush
