About this listen

‘Twists our expectations of the entire psychological thriller genre’ Guardian ‘This psychological Hitchcock-type thriller will keep haunting you’ Woman

Everyone knows a couple like Jack and Grace. He has looks and wealth, she has charm and elegance. You might not want to like them, but you do.

You’d like to get to know Grace better.

But it’s difficult, because you realise Jack and Grace are never apart.

Some might call this true love. Others might ask why Grace never answers the phone. Or how she can never meet for coffee, even though she doesn’t work. How she can cook such elaborate meals but remain so slim. And why there are bars on one of the bedroom windows.

Sometimes, the perfect marriage is the perfect lie.

This is not a story of clever coercive control. It’s a story of a woman who has great independence walking into an abusive situation, ignoring red flags the size of football pitches, and then stating she has no way of escape (despite quite obviously having avenues of escape). The whole setup is so hollow (and does disservice to women who have really been victims) that I couldn’t finish it.

Premise is too unbelievable DNF

This is one of the most miserable and depressing books I’ve ever read. I have no idea how it came to be classed as a thriller because nothing happens for three quarters of the book and the final section is dependent on the characters suddenly changing personalities.

Miserable and unbelievable
