About this listen
Kate Chopin was an American novelist and short-story writer. She was one of the first major Southern female voices in literature. Chopin specialized in whimsical tales of South, and the children’s short story "Beyond the Bayou", first published in 1891, is a perfect example.
"Beyond the Bayou" is about La Folle, an African American woman and former slave, who overcomes her crippling and irrational childhood fear of passing an imaginary territorial line or going beyond the bayou.
