About this listen

At Black Rabbit Hall nothing much ever happens - time seems to move slower at this idyllic holiday home in Cornwall. Until the worst thing happens and for the Alton children time feels like it's stopped altogether.

In the present day, Lorna Smith is searching for her perfect wedding venue and is inexplicably drawn to the now crumbling Black Rabbit Hall, unaware that her own history is locked up in those derelict walls....

I felt there was a good story in here, but it crushed my soul waiting for it to emerge. It meandered away from the plot so much that I lost heart and I'm afraid I couldn't finish it. It's a very slow read.

Wow - how long winded was this book

Riveting

I don't know why books like this have two timelines. There's one old timeline which is actually interesting about a family falling apart after the mother dies, the father withers and an evil stepmother intrudes. The new timeline is about a Bridezilla obsessed with having a wedding at some old broken down hall she stood outside of with her mum a couple of times.

While the old timeline was compelling and made up much of the story it wasn't very shocking. You can sort of guess what will happen and it does. I liked the ending and thought it wasn't a bad story just too slowly paced. This book was 13 hours and it could easily have fit in 8. The narration was fine.

Good A plot, weak B plot.

It took me a long time to get into this, and I will admit … I immensely enjoyed the last 4 hours but the lead up was a bit slow at times. There is an incredible amount of descriptive detail, which isn’t always necessary and did lead me to stopping reading altogether for a while.

The actual story itself is great and the ending is not as predictable as you may initially think. I found the person reading the book to be slightly annoying though…. Sorry Antonia

This book was an absolute delight. I love stories that involve old country houses and this one drew me in from the start. It’s so rich in detail I feel I could walk round Black Rabbit Hall itself. Beautifully narrated, the voice of Nancy was just as I imagined she would speak. Perfect. It has the twists and turns of an old staircase , you won’t be disappointed. Perfect for fans of Kate Morton’s books too
