Summary

She was taken against her will.

On her fifteenth birthday, trafficking victim Affi Smith goes for a run and never returns. With a new identity and secure home in the Scottish Highlands, she was supposed to be safe…

She escaped once.

With personal ties to Affi’s case, DS Max Craigie joins the investigation. When he discovers other trafficking victims have disappeared in exactly the same circumstances, he knows one thing for certain – there’s a leak somewhere within law enforcement.

She won’t outrun them again.

The clock is ticking… Max must catch Affi’s kidnappers and expose the mole before anyone else goes missing. Even if it means turning suspicions onto his own team…

Fantastic story filled with strong issues and well researched police procedures. The characters are well rounded and thankfully don't fall into overdone old tropes of the genre. There's and excellent balance of tension, twists and drama, carefully released with well placed humour. I can't share my favourites as spoilers except to say I loved the unexpected reveal catching most of the team by surprise and had them stumped for moment, let alone readers familiar with the series.
Credit also to Angus King and yet another superb performance. He has a vocal talent second to none and reads with such passion the book almost sounds like it was written for him.
This book is complete on its own, you don't need to read the series to enjoy it...but you'd be a fool not to.
Final point, I enjoy Lancaster's books for the tension and action, but more so for the lack of gratuitous violence or needlessly lengthy fight scenes too many authors wrongly believe are interesting. Lancaster strikes the right balance and rewards us with strong endings.

Another great story perfectly narrated

Best in series thus far, very enjoyable and hard to put down. Great follow up at sentencing to fully finish this storyline.

I thoroughly enjoyed “Blood Runs Cold” by Neil Lancaster which is the fourth book in the DS Max Craigie series, but it can be read as a standalone. It's a thriller with a whole host of interesting characters some of which I have got to know in the previous, also superb books. I particularly enjoyed the banter going back and forward between and amongst them. DI Ross Fraser’s (Ross Boss) creative cursing always brings a smile. The plot is complex, taking in the dark subject matters of people trafficking, child abuse and police corruption.

The narration by Angus King was excellent as always. He brought the characters to life with his expressive voice and creative characterisations. He kept me hooked from start to finish.

This was a gripping, entertaining and ingenious book that puts Neil Lancaster up at the forefront of Tartan Noir. Highly recommended!

A stunning Scottish crime thriller, tartan noir at its best!
