A beautifully written modern-day love story set in Sri Lanka and London. Emma le Roux is convinced she's seen her brother on the news as a suspect in the recent killing of four poachers. But her brother died twenty years ago. Then le Roux hires Lemmer - a professional bodyguard - to watch her back while she seeks answers. But it soon appears that others want the secrets protected at all costs, and will kill if necessary...
©2007 Deon Meyer (P)2011 WF Howes Ltd- it is not "a beautifully written modern-day love story set in Sri Lanka and London." It's a complex crime thriller set i game reserves along the north-easter borders of South Africa.
- A lot more exposition than necessary. I would not have objected to Meyer converting it into action and dialogue. That's what he does in his other books.
- I'm not sure that husband-and-wife pair of doctors would last long in the real world before they were struck off for professional misconduct.
- As others have pointed out, the ending is little too 'Hollywood'. It's like Meyer ran out of creative steam.
PROS
- Having a single first-person narrative is refreshing change for Deon Mayer.
- Great pace, great characters.
- Narration is by the consistently great Saul Reichlin. Delivering so many characters drawn from a kaleidoscope of cultures is an astonishing achievement.
- Making the often forgotten assassination of Samora Machel central to this story is a nice 'Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' touch.

Saul Reichlin gives a master class in reading with a cast of dozens of characters each with a distinctive accent and timbre. Highly recommended.
Exceptional writing

After that disappointment, I found something lacking in this book. It was like it tried too hard to be a love story and a thrilling novel, but never quite got there. There was some good, some bad (mainly the way Lemmer described the women in the book), but a general feeling of boredom through it all.
Overall Indifference.
