About this listen

Based on a true story, this is the tale of three strong women: Barbara, who was given a blue plastic cow that would later change her life forever; Florrie, who adopted a baby to replace the child she had lost; Carole, forced to give up her daughter by an unforgiving society.

Growing up in a loving northern working-class family based on the banks of the River Mersey, Barbara felt that she was different. After accidently discovering that she had been adopted, she was only given a part of the story. As a teenager unable to deal with the shock of what she had learned, she rebelled against her parents, finding solace in the exciting 1960s’ Liverpool music scene, spearheaded by the Beatles.

Decades later, Barbara discovered a tear-stained letter from her birth mother, containing heart-breaking words that would send her on a challenging 26-year quest to find Carole.

I listened to the book while in work on audio books, I found the story gripping and found myself listening to it in the car on my journey to and from work. Brilliant book.

A brilliant story of a girl trying to find her birth mother.

While I listened to the story I was walking the well known streets of my home town. I no longer live in Widnes but spent most of my 88 years there. It’s a really good read.

As an adoptee myself I was invested in this story from the very start but the way it was written helped get me hooked early and I found it to be a real page turner. Barbara set every scene so well, I felt like I was there and could picture just what it had been like for her as a child and growing up. She painted such a good clear picture of each step of her journey and my emotions roller-coasted as she went through her search for Carol step by step. I don’t want to give anything away but I was in tears towards the end. What an amazing read it was and I can’t recommend it highly enough! Thank you Barbara for sharing your amazing and moving story. I really loved it.

Written from the heart, an emotional and moving story, a definite page turner.

I did not expect to be drawn in so deeply and could not stop listening...and Deborah's narration was brilliant. By the end, I felt as if I were another sister, a distant relative drawn into the woven memories....it gave me peace in my own heart....thanks so very much, Barbara.....and thanks for showing that some of us are lucky enough to be blessed with amazing husbands!

What an amazing story!

Such a difficult subject to write about. The events came from Barbara’s heart. I listened constantly and was drawn into her story. Sad, lonely, and finally happy. Wonderful. Read brilliantly by Deborah
