About this listen
“An exciting space opera full of action and adventure that explores the bonds of loyalty and love, and what happens when they are stretched to their limits.”—Rebecca Roanhorse, Nebula and Hugo award–winning author of Trail of Lightning
Ettian’s life was shattered when the merciless Umber Empire invaded his world. He’s spent seven years putting himself back together under its rule, joining an Umber military academy and becoming the best pilot in his class. Even better, he’s met Gal—his exasperating and infuriatingly enticing roommate who’s made the academy feel like a new home.
But when dozens of classmates spring an assassination plot on Gal, a devastating secret comes to light: Gal is the heir to the Umber Empire. Ettian barely manages to save his best friend and flee the compromised academy unscathed, rattled that Gal stands to inherit the empire that broke him, and that there are still people willing to fight back against Umber rule.
As they piece together a way to deliver Gal safely to his throne, Ettian finds himself torn in half by an impossible choice. Does he save the man who’s won his heart and trust that Gal’s goodness could transform the empire? Or does he throw his lot in with the brewing rebellion and fight to take back what’s rightfully theirs?

Regarding the book in general, it was fine. Not outstanding, but I haven't been waiting for it to be a hard SF. If I would have there would be some major deficiencies but this way it was fine. The emphasis was on the political aspect, the action and on the characters. Speaking of characters, I loved them! Loved them with all their doubts and uncertainties, I loved that they weren't almighty, made their own mistakes and their strong bond had real basis.
I will definitely read (or listen, to be exact) the second book and hope it would be this great at least.
And for the record please, PLEASE, don't write major spoliers into the next books' blurb! I'm a reckless reader and read the blurb of the second book in about the third of the first book and it completely ruined the big plot twist for me. It would be so much better if I had the chance to find out myself or let it hit me right in the face at the end.

Fantastic

It manages a world including, and the central characters experiencing, queerness - and it does it so respectfully. It feels natural, accepted, and unforced.
The story itself is gripping, and the internal turmoils well illustrated.
I had to keep reminding myself which factions were which, and who was aligned with each, but I think that's more commentary on my memory and ability to picture unique words than the author.
The narrator has such a charming distinction between the two main characters, and the inflections in their voice at different times. It's well read, and easy to listen to.
Much enjoyed! Already bought the second book to see what happens next.
