Summary

Two days after Christmas, 2011, Russel Faria returned to his Troy, Missouri, home to find his wife, Betsy, dead, a knife still lodged in her neck. She had been stabbed 55 times in a brutal murder that would set off a chain of events leading to one man's wrongful conviction and imprisonment, another man's death, the revelation of a diabolical scheme, and an astounding miscarriage of justice left unresolved for another 10 years.

First responders concluded that Betsy was dead for hours when Russ discovered her. No blood was found implicating Russ, and surveillance video, receipts, and friends' testimony all supported his alibi. Yet incredibly, police and the prosecuting attorney ignored the evidence. In their minds, Russ was guilty. But prominent defense attorney Joel J. Schwartz quickly recognized the real killer.

The motive was clear. Days before her murder, the terminally ill Betsy replaced her husband with her friend, Pamela Hupp, as her life insurance beneficiary. Still, despite the prosecution's flimsy case and Hupp's transparent lies, Russ was convicted - leaving Hupp free to kill again. Bone Deep takes listeners through the perfect storm of miscalculations and missteps that led to an innocent man's conviction-and recounts Schwartz's successful battle to have that conviction overturned.

The course of justice is subverted by incompetence. Most satifying that a great injustice was overturned and an innocent man freed.

Police and prosecutors must examine facts very carefully and keep an open mind before laying charges

What a cracker of a book. Just when you thought it was the husband. So wrong. Poor guy.

I couldn't stop listening. I pray now for justice for Betsy and peace for Russell

Fantastic walk through of the truth!

At times early on I thought about finding something else as I found the reading of the initial police interviews annoying to the point of frustration but im really glad I stuck with it as I really enjoyed it in the end, it actually brought a tear to my eye at one point (I won't spoil it by saying when) Worth a listen especially whilst on the plus catalogue

Crazy True Story

Excellent account of a story which is almost too far fetched to be believed.
Judge Mennemeyer and prosecutor Leah Askey Chaney should be in prison. Leah Askey Chaney is a sociopath as bad as the killer and I hope she’s been struck off and barred from practicing in any legal capacity whatsoever. Just own up and apologise if you have any self-reflection and decency whatsoever! This story really highlights the travesty which is the American justice system. If a prosecutor can create a show of baseless and manipulative accusations to coerce a jury toward a verdict then this is no different than a show trial in any country with a dubious regime. Luckily there are other more intelligent people who won’t give up until the truth is brought to light. Really highlights the need for the innocence project. A robust and fair system should be able to convict the guilty as well as let the innocent go. Listening to this I realised with horror that lawyers, police, and judges are as blind, corrupt, and selfish as everyone else. Still, it was an excellently and thoroughly documented account of everything that happened around this sad case. Highly recommend.
