Summary

Monster. That's what they call me.

Lock your doors, hold your loved ones tight. The Carver is on the loose. Except I'm not. I was caught. The days of allowing my inner depravity to run wild are over. I've been sent to prison for good, something of a celebrity in this dark, dank hell-hole they call Alabaster Penitentiary. The only thing I have left to offer the world is my story, and unfortunately for me, the Warden has the rest of my life to get it out of me.

Being poked and prodded, examined and tested on isn't something I enjoy very much. Until they send him... The new doctor is here to study me and my crimes. And I'm beginning to think we might not be as different as it seems. He craves knowledge the way I crave the blood of my victims. Despite his robotic nature, there's just something about him... Something I want. But I'll have to be careful not to smother it to death. After all... It's kind of my thing.

**Brainwashed is a dark M/M doctor-patient romance, an interconnected standalone in the Alabaster Penitentiary series. While it follows a new couple, we strongly recommend you read Volumes 1-2 first to avoid spoilery situations. This book has true crime elements that may make some listeners uncomfortable. It is intended for mature audiences. Please proceed with caution. A detailed list of CW's can be found here: authornylak.com/brainwashed-content-warning

It is great to be back in Alabaster Penitentiary for another amazing romance novel, a dark and twisted mind-blow that is addictive and hard to pull away from because you just need to know what happens next. Nyla K. is a gifted author with a brilliant mind, a deviously brilliant mind, and I mean that in the best of ways. Her descriptive writing and details take you right alongside these characters, giving you a bird's-eye view of everything they are thinking and experiencing, putting you in the room where it happens. This third book is Felix Darcey’s story, Alabaster’s resident serial killer, aka the carver. Alabaster is an unconventional prison and a lot of unconventional things go on, and Blanco, the ward in charge, recruits another doctor to work with Darcey. Dr. Lemuel “Lem” Love is tired of his life and when offered an opportunity to work with one of the most notorious serial killers, he couldn’t refuse. Lem did not exactly fit in with the other doctors, but he avoided them as much as possible. Felix was not a fan of the other doctors or their treatment either and was looking forward to working with the new doctor, Dr. Love. OMG, it was great to watch Lem get into Felix’s head and hear everything he did, his logic in regards and his fixation on killing. Felix is crushing on the doctor who is straight, but there is no doubt about the chemistry between them, though Lem denies it and refuses to go there. Felix gets into Lem’s head and he questions his own needs and preferences. I loved how everything played out in this book, the writing, plot and world building are phenomenal, as are the character growth and development. This book may take some out of their comfort zone, and the author warms to proceed with caution. I say go in with an open mind and enjoy the wild ride. I got some Silence of the Lamb vibes, except Clarice was a male and Hannibal had a crush and was looking for more, and then add some more insanity to the story and kink, too. Nyla K., thank you for another amazing story and wild ride.

🎧📚🎧Walker Williams and Brent Billings did a fantastic job bringing these characters to life, giving each a voice that was fitting and believable. Brent Billings is a “new to me” narrator, while it took me a while to get used to his pacing and delivery, and once I did, I was hooked. He nailed it as Dr. Love, grasping every aspect of his personality, transformed as his character did as the story went on. Walker Williams delivered in his role as Darcey, playing the perfect sociopath. Both were great performing the roles of the secondary characters, too. They set the perfect tone for the story, captured all the characters’ emotions and had you feeling them all. These two versatile voice artists are entertaining storytellers and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for this fantastic listen.

Im not sure what to say except ooofff!! This is a bizarre story about a serial killer and his doctor which at first I was like this is totally inappropriate but as time went on I loved Felix the serial killer and understood why he was the way he was and wanted him to have his HEA! The doctor has his own past and demons but they just compliment his feelings for Felix!! I love what happens to the predators in this book!! 👏👏 This is a totally bizarre wild ride 🥺 and I loved it!!

Darkly delicious

Nyla - "Book 3 of Alabaster Penitentiary will be about a true unapologetic sociopathic serial killer & his psychiatrist."

Me - "Say less." *Dives in with glee

Once again this review will be breif as i don't want to potentially spoil anything for anyone, obviously check content and TWs if necessary but i feel going into Nyla's books as blind as possible/completely works best if you can.

Brainwashed tells the story of Felix & Dr. Love & after reading books 1&2 I couldn't wait to get to this one, Felix our resident serial killer fascinated me from the breif glimpses we got of him before and he didn't disappoint! Dr. Love aka Lem was morally grey at best, its clear there is darkness underneath his surface from the get go and his fascination with the macabre and yearning to understand but not change Felix was delicious. These two complimented each other perfectly, they are both highly intelligent, complex and unpredictable individuals which made for such an intriguing read I could barely put this down.

If you are a true crime fan then this should be right up your alley as it has lots of nods to/easter eggs of some of the more well known real life cases out there, Nyla does a fantastic job of referencing things without glorifying them. That being said it is a testament to her talent/skill as a writer how she makes you fall completely in love with Felix over the course of this book, he doesn't show a single ounce of remorse for his crimes but you can't help but adore him. Well I couldn't and if that makes me wrong so be it. 🤷‍♀️ The chemistry between Lem & his little psycho lept off the page, I ate their interactions up with a spoon! The spice was ON POINT but I expect nothing less from Nyla tbh, she knows how to write excellent spice. Both narrators were fantastic, their performances really added emotion, chemistry & drove the sense of macabre with how they portrayed Felix & Lem. Just incredible! 🌶🌶🌶🌶

Incredible
