About this listen

Heart to blood, muscle to bone, tourist flesh above my own. It’s the bridgers’ directive: risk your own life to save tourists bridging to alternate worlds. Bridger Infinity Fowler has no qualms about the directive. Risking death is just what bridgers do. But now the earth is dying. Bridgers have a new directive—save as many humans as possible, even if some must be sacrificed in the process. Sacrificing lives is not what Infinity signed up for. Desmond Weaver, determined to help save the human species, has volunteered to be Infinity’s partner. He has ingenuity and grit, but is this enough to make it as a bridger? Their mission: bridge 718 refugees to a new world and establish a colony. If the world is occupied, avoid conflict and learn to coexist. Once bridging begins, there is no turning back. The new world is indeed occupied, but not by humans, and avoiding conflict isn’t so easy. As violence erupts, Infinity and Desmond realize they may have only one hope of saving the colony—sacrificing refugees they have sworn to protect. How far would you go to save the human species?

I read this book, and its wider series, some time ago and have been lucky enough to now be able to enjoy it all over again via audiobook. Both are excellent and I can honestly say I am loving being back with Infinity and co. The first thing this book tells me is Stan C Smith knows how to follow up a great first book and that’s with another equally brilliant story. Book 1 ended with some terrible news for Desmond and Infinity: Earth is dying, fast. Infinity is now asked to change from ‘tourist’ protector to colony protector. She is sent to another version of Earth to establish a new colony of humans before our own world is totally destroyed so some small piece of our race can survive. Looking after 718 souls is a massive change for the bridger who has, at most, taken 3 people to an alternate world. With time running out she must do whatever it takes to establish this new colony before she returns to her own world to do it all again. Stan C Smith has created something unique with the bridgers series and it’s evident that he has a plan for the entire series. This novel is as good as the first but it’s not just a rehash of what we’ve already had. This is a truly great second book and, although it has all the action, tension and excitement of the previous book, it stands on its own as a great story. Apocalypse/Sci-Fi/Fantasy fiction at its very best that makes you wonder what could be possible and leaves you thinking long after you’ve finished reading.
The narration, once again by Victoria Lynn Arbor, is pitch perfect for both Infinity and the story itself. Highly recommended.

Excellent Sequel.

I think this second entry in the Bridgers universe has a stronger plot than the first, being able to devote more time to character development after the world building that was established in the first episode of the series. The narration remains very strong, with the narrator's interpretation of the proto-human's language being particularly expressive. Thoroughly enjoyable for those that enjoy big science fiction ideas that feel like they come out of the golden age, but with modern storylines that ensure the reader remains hooked.

Strong second entry in the series
