Summary

The third title in the compelling Tales of the Otori – the story that began with Across the Nightingale Floor and Grass for his Pillow, Brilliance of the Moon by Lian Hearn is an epic tale of love, power and destiny, set in a mythical world inspired by feudal Japan.

Takeo and the exquisite Kaede, still only teenagers, are now married, but the implacable forces of destiny that rule their lives tear them apart. Takeo, a battle-hardened warrior at the head of an army fighting for his Otori birthright, finds his courage and leadership forged in the fire of bloodshed and sacrifice, while his legendary magical powers are tested to their limits against the invisible assassins of the Tribe. Kaede, determined to reclaim her own lands, is treacherously betrayed and forced into marriage. Their love will survive until death – but death, in this savage, beautiful world, is always only a moment away.

Critic reviews

Lian Hearn is creating an imaginary world every bit as absorbing as Middle Earth and Hogwarts . . . This is the same mysterious oriental landscape that beguiled Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon audiences.
Quite simply the best story of magic, love, sex, revenge and suspense since Philip Pullman.

I have read all her books, and never tire of hearing the Audio either. A great adventure tale you won't tire of, as well learning the histories of medieval Japan.

Lian Hearn is a great mistress of Story telling

A beautifully written story, it captivates me every time I read it. Listening to the story for the first time has been a real treat and I've completed the trilogy within a week! I'm hoping the prequel and sequel have the same narrators.

Such a beautiful story

Like the ongoing tale weaving through many books. Easily conjures images of long ago Japan. Don't know why narrator has to have an American accent? Make and female narrators are speaking at different speeds. Apart from these two minor negatives I have very much enjoyed this book and the previous books in the series
