When an old man is found viciously murdered, a swastika carved in his chest, the obvious conclusion is that this killing must be racist. Suspicion falls on the son of the local doctor, found in flagrant playing sex games surrounded by Nazi paraphernalia.©2008 Walker and Watson Ltd (P)2014 Audible, Inc. Bit disappointed in this as I really enjoyed Devils Cave. The story was not so gripping and the narrator did not hold me. Am not sure if I will listen to anymore but may try if different narrator.

Mediocre

Martin Walker is as good for Dordogne tourism as an outbreak of Black Plague! First of a series set in the village of Saint Denis, with a murder rate exceeding that of Midsomer, and too much history, social inequality and conspiracy, far too many guns and breakfast alcohol.
The audiobook seems to be a US edition; there are unfamiliar expressions like "slacks" - a US type of trousers, which sound very unflattering, and "cell phone" - a mobile, not communication from gaol!
Walker portrays a France just as flawed as that of Balzac, Flaubert and Zola, but with Bruno, a decent man trying to find stability and community after a lonely childhood and traumatic military service.

Not PC Plod, exactly.

"Bruno, Chief of Police" was such a lovely surprise. I really enjoyed the gorgeous setting, a solid mystery, fascinating bits of WWII history and succinct yet exact examples of French nature and thinking. The author masterfully mixes relaxing, cosy crime writing with social commentary and funny moments. "Bruno, Chief of Police" is relaxing and fun yet exciting and thrilling. Most recommended!

A lovely surprise. Highly recommended!

Could of done without the regional English accents for French characters.

Hard to mentally escape when it reminds you of being down the local Tesco.

Makes you fall in love with France whilst providing insight into life in a small town and old sins which come back to haunt people. The narrator has a soothing voice and brings the characters to life. And there are the great recipes for authentic French farm cooking. Meet Bruno local Chief of police working on racist murder case that is not what it looks like... enjoy.
