Summary

A peaceful organization of civilized planets is faced with a threat to their very existence. Desperate to save themselves, they turn for help to the most brutal, backward, violent species in the known galaxy: humans.

Growing up in the aftermath of an apocalyptic event known as "The Bad Week" hasn't been easy for Cross Agarwal. Decades ago, in a world before The Bad Week, he would have been graduating from college, starting a career, and living on his own. But in a post-apocalyptic time when mankind is in ruins and on the verge of self-destruction, Cross works in his father's subterranean cobra farm, tries to avoid getting involved in the turf war between his town and the Southern Basin, wondering if his future will ever be anything but bleak.

When a group of aliens appears by surprise and invites a select group of humans to join them, it could be Cross's chance to not only find his own place in the universe, but to also help prove that humanity is good for more than just violence.

Entertaining as ever, Meyer brings his trademark humour and reluctant everyman protagonists to a post-apocalyptic earth. The refusal to get bogged down in what 'the bad week' actually consisted of sets the tone for a fun adventure that is not concerned overly with building a logical, ordered universe or with any questions that don't further the plot or humour. As long as you're prepared to go along with this, it's a great time and a very enjoyable listen. The narration is excellent, adding to the humour and doing a great job of bringing the characters to life.

Light hearted soft sci-fi fun

One of the strangest sci-fi books I've listened to. A really wacky story with excellent narration. I'm glad I stuck with it.

Not your average sci-fi book.

less innovative than Grand Theft Astro but still really fun. Scott's on a bit of a roll when it comes to crafting fun, accessable world's with straight forward characters and a tight narrative

really good fun

If you've read any of Scott Meyer's works, you know what you're in for. Unlike Grand Theft Astro, Brutal Force is a lot sillier and whimsical, with some excellent wit and hilarious moments.

It's far from a sci-fi epic, but if you're not a total stick in the mud, you'll probably enjoy it! My only gripe is that Meyer tends towards making extremely irritating villains that, while it adds a lot of listener investment and satisfaction when they're dealt with, can be quite annoying to listen to. I suspect this is entirely by design, but I've had similar issues with this in some of his other stories.

Luke Daniels is a fantastic narrator, definitely one of the best I've heard on Audible. Great delivery of all characters and really performs the lines. He's consistently narrated all of Meyer's books and he conveys the humour perfectly.

Daft sci-fi fun
