About this listen

THE 10 MILLION COPY BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF THE GRIPPING DEPARTMENT Q SERIES IS BACK

A boy is on the run from an international conspiracy . . .

Over three years ago, a civil servant vanished after returning from a work trip to Africa.

Presumed dead, his family still want answers.

It's up to Department Q, Denmark's cold cases department, to find out the truth. But what Detective Carl Morck doesn't know, is that the key to the investigation is right here in Copenhagen . . .

Fifteen-year-old Marco Jameson is tough, smart and very suspicious of police. Sleeping rough and hiding in the shadows is his way of life.

But what does he know worth killing for - and will the police find him before whoever he is running from?

I’ve listened to the first two books in the series and think your need to listen to at least book 1 first to get the most out of this fifth book, the early part of which is confusing enough as seemingly unconnected narrative threads take a long time to make sense. After a slow start the momentum of the novel builds into an unrelenting series of jeopardy scenes involving the young illegal immigrant, Marco, that went on a bit too long and made me hope for some variation in tone. I’d prefer less inter-personal sarcasm and quarrelling among the policemen and women who are becoming caricatures of irritable unpleasantness. My favourite character is Assad, the enigmatic dogsbody to Inspector Carl Morck, whose backstory from Iraq is slowly emerging.

Despite my criticisms it is a gripping thriller excellently narrated by Steven Pacy.

A roller-coaster of a book

Another instalment of Dept Q. The usual characters. A mixture of crime, social commentary, humour and intrigue. All adds up to a great listen. As usual the narration is excellent

Excellent as usual

i was glad to find this most recent instalment of Department Q, I'd missed it more than I realised. The story is juicy enough to keep you interested and all characters are back on form. I get a lovely sense of familiarity with this series, like I can always count on being entertained and cheered up on a bad day. Let's hope it stays that way.

That being said, when you finish the book you don't really feel like the characters have advanced such as you have before. You still don't know much more about Assad's past, Rose is the most normal she's ever been and the most trying thing Carl experiences is relationship issues. I think /hope this is a filler story, the calm before the storm as it were and if we are lucky enough to have a next instalment I hope the pace picks up a bit.

Over all however, I was not deterred and really enjoyed the listen. Still a big fan of Department Q

You can always count on Department Q

I did struggle in the first chapter as it was so far removed from Dept Q - I even had to check I was listening to the right book - however you soon realise this is absolutely necessary to support and explain the rest of the plot. I was gripped. The interaction between the Dept Q team is equally funny, sad and mysterious. I loved it. Having read the previous 4 books I hope there are still more to come

Another great Department Q story - gripping

As good as the first book. Plenty of secrets that books two, three and four missed a bit. I live them all and will keep listening anyway. Thank you.

Best since the first.
