In spite of her mother’s best efforts, Caddie is as wild as the wind, playing freely and rambunctiously with her two brothers in the Wisconsin backwoods. There are rafts to build and trees to climb and pranks to play. Caddie especially likes to watch her friend Indian John build birchbark canoes at the river.

Loved this well-written story based on the life of a young girl's life on the frontier. Quality literature, not twaddle. While many modern books try to challenge stereotypes about girls, this book beat them to it, without denigrating masculinity either. Relationships with parents, siblings, and people of other ethnicities portrayed in healthy ways.
9 and 11 year old girl and boy captivated by this story on a long journey, with its exciting moments, characters worth caring about, and real portrayal of life in years gone by.
