If a character from a Jack Vance novel wrote a first person account of weird prison economics, it may read something like this. Thorpe perfectly evokes narrator, Stefan Advarny, as a pompous academy boy stuck in a vile and dangerous prison at the end of the world. The other characters like rogue, Peter, and the chilling underworld characters/creatures are equally on point.
I loved Tchaikovsky’s Children series so took a chance on this. They could be in the same universe, but they are very different in tone. I think I liked this more, as there is as much humour as weird, unsettling horror, and I will carry these characters with me for some time.

I enjoyed listening to this story although it was not what i expected after reading the blurb. T,he happenings within were entertaining, the characters engaging, the setting interesting, the narration superb but unfortunately i dont know what the point if it all was.

It didn't feel like a story, just a guy going on about what he did. whilst he wasn't getting killed somewhere else. It seemed that a good chunk of the story - what was actually going on in this world - was missing and that's where the action was.

I don't want to give a bad review, I enjoyed the book, it just left me feeling a bit underwhelmed and wondering if my time would have been better spent on something else.

David Thorpe did a good job of performing this book. A decent narrator can really make a book. The story itself is set in the last city of humanity and a prison island up river in the vicious jungle.

As befits the last city on Earth it is a bit run down. Old technology is scavenged and held together by mechanics who don't know what they are doing. The last days are evocative and atmospheric.

Surrounded by deadlock desert and poisoned seas, this is no Jack Vance fantasy future. Yet the author still creates a functioning society with nobility and politics worthy of the Medicis.

I was so amazed by the unique setting of this book. It took a long time for me to find a dystopian novel, so I was really looking for to getting into this. It had some great details, twists and mini stories knitted in. Some of the characters are great and really imaginative. I was underwhelmed by the main storyline however. I really was expecting more. It felt like it went on forever. The main surprises of the story and plot twists were, in my opinion, disappointing. There is so much potential the world this book is set in and I felt it was underused. It also felt like this story and characters came from quite a dark place. Some characters and scenes made me feel uncomfortable. Maybe that shows it was written well, considering its setting. I was a little unsure of the narrator at first, but he plays the part of each character so well. It’s great how he does the voices for each one, it really adds to the story.

All in all, definitely worth a read / listen, but I wouldn’t read it twice.
