This was a wonderful book about Captain Cook's first voyage into the Pacific Ocean (during which he mapped New Zealand and the East Coast of Australia). Over the years I've read several books on Cook - including his journals - and I did wonder if I had the appetite for more. However this book was a real joy - I loved the narration once I had settled into the first few minutes and the story itself is told with great skill. There is an ideal mix between descriptions of the journey and its discoveries, and explanations of the wider context (what had come before in terms of earlier explorers; the rival French expedition that almost overlapped with Cook in New Zealand; the politics and ideas of the time; the search for a "Great South Land"). I am sure you won't be disappointed in coming along on this trip...

How Captain Cook skilfully navigated the East coast of Australia is captivated in this marvellous account, causing you to will him on to surmount the numerous problems he faced of navigation, damage to the Endeavour, scurvy, hostile indigenous peoples and other nationalities. Highly recommended.

Really liked this book. Very interesting subject matter and also very well read. Incredible to think that it was possible to carry out such journey! Will listen to it again in due course.
