'Deliriously clever' GUARDIAN

-----

Now a major BBC drama: The Strike series

When a mysterious package is delivered to Robin Ellacott, she is horrified to discover that it contains a woman's severed leg.

Her boss, private detective Cormoran Strike, is less surprised but no less alarmed. There are four people from his past who he thinks could be responsible - and Strike knows that any one of them is capable of sustained and unspeakable brutality.

With the police focusing on the one suspect Strike is increasingly sure is not the perpetrator, he and Robin take matters into their own hands, and delve into the dark and twisted worlds of the other three men. But as more horrendous acts occur, time is running out for the two of them...

A fiendishly clever mystery with unexpected twists around every corner, Career of Evil is also a gripping story of a man and a woman at a crossroads in their personal and professional lives. You will not be able to put this book down.

I started listening to audiobooks last year so that I could do other things and still consume books. I loved A Casual Vacancy so tried the Strike books about 3 weeks ago. They are so good that I have listened to all 4 since: when I wake up, when I go to the allotment or into the garden and when I am knitting. As a journo and editor, I tend to notice more than others when someone's writing does not flow effortlessly. As a former performer, I also notice bad acting. Both hurt. But here is that rare combination of great, simple, apparently effortless writing combined with great performance skills. Listening to Robert Galbraith is like listening to a friend tell a story. Listening to Robert Glenister is like listening to a cast of thousands. I forget I am listening and I am there. There's nothing more than one can ask of a book than to forget the one is where one is and not in the thick of it, with the characters. A perfect combination. Thank you both so much. Now all I have to do is wait 3 months for Book 5.

What did you like most about Career of Evil?

I really enjoyed the narrative and humour. How ever I love the depth to the characters Robin and Strike. Especially as they seem like real people with real struggles. A wonderful fast paced storyline, with all the intrigue that keeps you guessing and guessing right up until the end. I loved every minute of it, and can't believe the book finishes how it does. I can't wait for the next one, and was some what sad when I finished it. Robert Galbraith books are a favourite read, and yes reread, all of them. I highly recommend them.

A wonderful story

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend the book, but would suggest that the books are read in order so that the characters can be fully appreciated. Whilst it is a slow start the detail and characterisation are excellent.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Robin has developed in each book and really comes to the forefront in this book. The chemistry between her and Strike continues to develop in a tantalising way

What does Robert Glenister bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I think Robert brings Strike to life and I now visualise him as Strike. Some of his regional accents are not quite right but not to the detriment of the book.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I believe these three books would make an excellent mini-series in the tv

Any additional comments?

Great read
