Absolutely loved this book from the Macro and Cato series. One of the best so far I would say.

Additionally, Keeble did very well narrating the story. After checking the samples, I found he was more fitting for what my imagination had in mind for the characters. Only strange thing was obviously the attempt at the female voice. But, I'm certainly not going to grumble, as that's well and truly expected.

Overall, incredibly enjoyable.

Fantastic story and pace. The return of Jonathan Keeble as the narrator is welcomed. If the previous narrator of the last 2 books had done the rest of the series, I’d have stopped listening. Keeble’s narration is superb as usual, he manages to portray the character very well and the accents and pronunciations are good.

This is my 8th listen to the Eagle series in the correct order and I have to admit it palled for me at times and I nearly set it aside. It could be tighter. The reasons were the dominance of battle scenes, the length afforded to them, and the performance of Jonathan Keeble. Keeble is a heavily used performer of audiobooks and sometimes I wonder whether he as fresh as he might be, and I noticed a repeat and miss-reads in this performance. That said, I did not set it aside, and was pleased that I did not. As soon as The Roman ambassador to Palmyra and his daughter came on to the scene things looked up and there was more in character portrayal. The ending was a surprise and lifted my expectations for future novels in the series; just as well as I am committed to it both in print and audiobook versions. As usual, Scarrow's blending history with fiction works supremely well. Why do I continue the commitment is a question worth the asking. The novels are generally a compelling 'page-turner' refreshing change of a listen amongst other audiobooks and novels (types and series) that I follow.

Good news for one of our heroes as Macro and Cato head to Syria and a fight with the Parthians. pushed into the advance of the roman expedition to Palmyra the pair and their cohorts first fight into a city then hold it off against rebels waiting for a relief column that may or may not arrive. another excellent tale of adventure and conspiracy never knowing who to trust.
