About this listen

The new novel by the author of the best-selling The World Walker series.

'My name is Daniel Harbin, and I'm a child of The Deterrent.'

What if a superhuman turned out not to be so super...or even human? Britain's superhero, The Deterrent, was unveiled to the world in 1979 and disappeared two years later. The truth about his origins has never been revealed. The rumours about his children - those that survived - and their mysterious abilities have never been confirmed. Until now.

Armed with a diary that reveals everything about The Deterrent's early years, Daniel Harbin - discovering powers of his own - finds himself dragged into the same secretive government department his famous father worked for. Can a halfhero be a better superhero than his father, or is Daniel making a terrible mistake? When the wrong people know what you're capable of, no matter how powerful you are, you're still in danger....

Critic reviews

"I've read it now, Children of the Deterrent that is and um...it's good. It's really good. Oh my days it's good.... From the opening page, I was seriously gripped. In fact, for the first time in years, I put my own work aside and pushed my deadlines back a bit to make time to read it. I even did that reader thing of going to bed early, just so I could get stuck back into it." (R R Haywood)

To be fair, had this not been on offer I wouldn't have bought it. On the whole it is well written and I found the narration good. The basic idea of the story is different but sadly the characters are not. The baddies are governmental and bad, with all the wrong motives and ideals. The goodies are good and any bad they do is purely the result of the baddies misleading them and/or doing nasty things to them. Incidental characters are cardboard and disposable in an environmentally friendly way. It could lead to an interesting series but does not inspire me to find out by buying any sequel.

Sadly predictable

An unexpectedly great book! A very new take on the superman troupe and I struggled to put it down - I’ll be moving straight on to the next books in the series

A great find!

This was an interesting take on the superhero genre focusing mostly on the self realisation of the main character and the back story with his father. Fairly interesting though it has been a week since I listened to it and have forgotten what happened. Fun to listen to though. The female narrator much better; sadly the male narrator read very slowly and like he was bored and it seems that the second book is read solely by him so I may pick up a copy of the actual book instead.

Fun but nothing special

I started this having recently finished an audio book with 4 narrators and my initial reaction to seeing it was multiple narrators wasn't great but the narrators and the story I just think showed me how it should all be done. It's a great story with some good twists which kept me coming back for me. Really good listen and will get the second book now

Great story, great narration
