Summary
In this luminous sci-fi debut, a nonverbal autistic woman refuses to crumble as she stands against a dogmatic society clinging to a centuries-long conflict built on lies.
Citadel is the only human city on the alien planet Edalide, ruled by the biweekly tides that bring both deadly danger and much-needed resources. But the drowning waters, constant threat of starvation, and eternal cold aren’t the most dangerous challenge. For the Flooded Forest is ruled by demons: monsters from Hell sent by their vengeful god as penance for their ancestors’ rebellion. To save their souls and return to their former glory, Citadel must kill every single one.
Or so they believe.
Olivia lost her lover to the demons almost a year ago. But during a scientific expedition, a chance encounter reveals that the demons are sentient—a startling discovery that would get Olivia executed if she exposed it.
Driven by the burning need for answers, Olivia embarks on a dangerous journey into the Forest. There, she must face alien monsters, zealous warriors, and the demons of her own past. But change comes slowly, and always with a price…

Really refreshing perspective to have a non-verbal character who isnt a caricature.

I found it to be amazingly well written. The world they had built, the story, the characters everything. I already liked the description but after the first chapter I was hooked. I usually like to physically have a book in my hand to read it. However lately I've found it hard to actually sit down & concentrate long enough to read a book. Even one I've been looking forward to reading. No idea why that is. But as a result I've had to turn to auditable so I can at least listen to the books despite having lack of focus to actually read them.
Sometimes I've found I can connect with a book a lot easier if they are read to me. Rather than me reading them myself. I can get too easily distracted sometimes within my chaotic brain. So listening still allows me to enjoy the beautiful stories authors put on the page for people to enjoy. It helps immensely if the voice reading it is pleasing to one's ear. Emily Lawrence in my personal opinion did a fantastic job doing just that.
Of course it helps massively if the story, the world built & characters etc are really good too. So it's no wonder that citadel was such a big hit for me. As cheesy as it may sound I felt transported & drawn into the story. Hanging on every word as the story unfolded. Now I am finished with it. I am hoping for a sequel. I can't fully remember if the author said there was going to be one. But I sincerely hope there is. Even though some could say it ended quite well. I still think it left an opening for more. Plus questions left unanswered. I would certainly like to know if things worked out the way Olivia & her friends hoped it would. Or if the actions of her fellow humans would ruin it for everyone as so often happens in even our own history. I do hope it works out the way she & her friends hope. As that would be the most ideal outcome. I'd love to see how that unfolds. If it becomes reality at all even.
There is no question about it. If there is a sequel I'm definitely listening to it or reading it.
Holy Moly that was amazing!
