About this listen

Something wicked is coming...

In this sequel to City of Gods and Monsters, Loren Calla and Darien Cassel have settled back into their old routines, grateful that the whirlwind of dangers they'd faced on Kalendae and the weeks leading up to it are now behind them—or so they think.

Loren soon finds herself caught in a new storm of trouble when the Terran Imperator blackmails her into working for him. There's only one problem: he expects her to use her magic, and she doesn't seem to have any of it left. To keep Darien and the other Devils safe, she agrees to everything the imperator asks of her. But the secrets she is forced to keep from Darien and her involvement with the imperator's son threaten to drive her away from Darien in ways she might never recover from…

As Randal Slade's successor, Darien wants nothing to do with the throne his father once sat on, but the city of Angelthene has other plans. The Magical Protections Unit asks for his help in taking down the illegal arms trade his father once dabbled in, and to do that, Darien must claim his place at the top of the tiers of Darkslayers—a crown the other circles are willing to kill to possess. As he spirals deeper into the secrets his father kept, he makes enemies of friends and friends of enemies—and finds himself buried so deep in Angelthene's underbelly that he is uncertain he'll ever get out of it. And if that wasn't enough, Darien fears he is going crazy when he starts to see creatures that only he can see…

Return to Angelthene in City of Souls and Sinners, a gripping, action-packed tale that tackles themes of love and loss, light and darkness, and the battle between good and evil—and what happens when you can't tell which is which.

Love the stories but really hate how Loren is being made to sound like a girl some would love to just shake and roll eyes at.

Annoying narrator

This is a very dense bridge book, and while it has some excellent moments, I found it a challenging listen overall.

The action scenes are fantastic - intense, immersive, and genuinely gripping but the pacing between them often slows dramatically. There are long stretches of repetition, political meetings, and withheld information that made parts of the story feel like hard work rather than enjoyment.

I struggled particularly through the middle of the book, where the plot felt stalled and characters seemed to circle the same emotional ground without meaningful progression. While this clearly sets up a larger story, it sometimes felt like too much information was being thrown at the listener without enough explanation.

One thing that stood out was the inconsistent reaction to major supernatural events. Sabrine’s transition from missing witch to being turned into a werewolf is a significant development, yet it receives very little on-page reaction. Meanwhile, a Darkslayer dating a human becomes a major point of discussion and concern. That contrast made the world feel oddly selective about which consequences mattered.

That said, the narration is excellent. The audiobook performance genuinely carried sections of the story that I might have struggled with in print alone. Switching between physical and audio formats helped me stay engaged, and the narrator deserves credit for bringing depth and consistency to such a large cast.

I did enjoy Max and Dallas’ storyline and Max’s POV, but again, similar romantic beats are repeated, which slightly undercut the uniqueness of the Darkslayers as the dangerous, untouchable figures they are presented to be.

One of the standout positives for me was Mortifer!!! He is an absolutely underrated, quietly brilliant character who brought warmth, loyalty, and grounding to an otherwise very heavy narrative.

There are strong ideas and moments here, but overall this instalment felt more like a necessary step in the series than a standout listen. It does end on a cliffhanger, but I’ll be taking a break before continuing.

A solid listen for fans of the series - just be prepared for a slower, more demanding middle.

2.5 🌟 for story. 4 🌟 for narration.

So ok I get the hype of this series now I’m loving the ride! Is the plot, story etc perfect… no but do I love it… yes! Darien is top tier & oh so wounded with all the trauma but we love him! We all want a Darien. Absolutely loving the other character developments now I love a series when you also love the side characters it’s so important for me.
