Summary

Why are the hot guys always straight?

Gus is off men, thanks to his jackass of an ex. He’s put his focus on becoming Boston’s first amputee paramedic and doesn’t care that his new rookie partner wants the same job. Or that the straight, married dad is all wrong for him.

Madoc never imagined having to restart his career. But he’ll do anything to make a better life for his daughter, even if it means reporting to a hotshot who wants the job Madoc deserves. A guy Madoc can’t stop thinking about no matter how hard he tries.

The partners strike up a friendship, supporting each other after Gus is injured and Madoc’s ex-wife abandons the family. But when crushes become real attraction and Gus bonds with Madoc’s child, will Madoc be ready to stop playing it straight?

Listened to the audio of this one. The narrator does a good job but sometimes I wish his voices were more distinctly different.
I love Gus, he is a bundle of sunshine. Uber-positive despite all the hardship he's gone through losing his friend, his leg, his lover, and his money.
Madoc took me longer to like. He was quick to anger or take offence and just when I thought things had settled down he completely overreacted for no reason. But seeing him with his kid you see a whole new side of him and when Gus becomes his kid sitter that's when the story really took off for me.
In the end this was a lovely romance that moved effortlessly from colleagues, to friends, to friends with benefits and finally to a HEA.

I enjoyed the first EMS Station 1 audiobook so I was happy to grab this second one.

Madoc is having a rough time. He’s moved to Boston from Seattle – essentially starting over - to make a better life for his daughter. He’s balancing a turbulent home life with a very challenging job. His ex-wife is unreliable and his ex-brother-in-law is helpful but not always around. Madoc is struggling to get a handle on everything even as he takes on a new boss who is angling for the same promotion he is.

Oh, and the guy’s damn attractive. Madoc’s never been with a man before, but he’s noticed them. Now Gus has his full attention.

Gus ribs Madoc, but does respect him. However his job is to ensure the ‘rookie’ is up to snuff. Even though Madoc clearly is. Gus’s life-altering injury a few years ago had him changing careers midstream, but he’s settled into EMT nicely. But he wants a paramedic spot on P1. His biggest competition? Madoc.

Then Gus gets injured on the job, Madoc needs help with his daughter and all of a sudden, the men are spending a lot of time together. A damn lot.

The inevitable happens.

But then life complicates things. Things get said. Feelings get hurt. Madoc isn’t willing to come out of the closet and Gus only sees heartache in his future.

Things looked a little bleak.

But that wasn’t the end of the story, of course. Throw in some well-meaning parents, a brother-in-law who sees the light of day, and a matchmaking six-year-old and maybe a happy ending might just happen for Gus and Madoc.

Okay. Lovely story. A little angsty at times, but that worked. Valerie truly stole the show and hats of to K. Evan for writing such a great family dynamic. Also, well done to Kevin Earlywine for his fantastic narration. He’s always a pleasure to listen to. Can’t wait for the next book!

Lovely single dad story

Kevin Earlywine did a great job performing this audiobook! The story is sweet with a bit of angst but I loved it. Gus has had some hard knocks from life lately – related to his job and also his personal life – but he’s adjusted to his new normal. What he hasn’t really gotten over is the way his ex-boyfriend did him dirty.

Madoc is a single dad who loves his daughter more than anything. He clashes with Gus when he is assigned to work under Gus’s supervision. He’s an experienced EMT but he’s having to start over as a rookie after relocating.

This story sucked me in so hard! I started listening to it later in the evening than I should have and ended up staying up way too late (early? LOL) to finish listening to it. Gus and Madoc have more than a few bumps before they get their HEA but I loved every minute of their story.

Great enemies-to-lovers vibe & single dad romance.

Story: Great contemporary story with genuine characters and real - life struggles a reader can easily identify with. I loved how the author approached the story and the complicated emotions the MCs navigated on top of growing attraction. A great book!
Performance: I liked it! Don't know the narrator well, but I enjoyed this performance a lot.

My first book by this author, I wasn't sure what to expect from this audiobook. What I got was a heart-warming, at times heart-breaking, sweet family going through hard times, a wild Gusberry looking for his own fam & new place to belong, and a very bumpy ride when their two paths collided. While not usually a fan (at ALL) of the 3rd act break-up, this one needed to happen, for all involved. This story has a lot of heart, humor, self-discovery, and growth, both together and apart, for pretty much all involved. Gus & Mad's relationship is a mix of rivals/friends to lovers, and while it's a weird mix of tropes, it totally worked for them, and was exactly what they needed in their lives at the time. Val, of course, stole the show.
Kevin Earlywine's narration brought the story & characters to life beautifully. His performance caught the heart-felt emotions, laughter, & love in the author's words, and conveyed them all straight to the listeners' hearts.

Love Gus and Val!
