We hear the crawlers closing in. A T-34. They must have seen us, Tiny whispers. - Stay low until it is right here, then we run! The horrible clattering of the crawler comes closer and closer. I know this fear, creeping up the spine. It will mean certain death if they run just one second too soon. How we get up, I don't know, the legs move automatically. The tank wiggles over the hole and crushes everything in it. Then it rumbles on...

Sven Hassel was sent to a penal battalion as a private in the German forces. Intensely and with brutal realism, he portrays the cruelty of the war, the Nazi crimes and the crude and cynical humor of the soldiers. With more than 50 million sold copies, this is one of the world's best selling war novels.

THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR HAS GOTTEN HIS MONUMENT
--MORGENAVISEN, NORWAY

I love all his books. First two are the best. Grim, dark and entertaining. Opens your eyes to the brutality of the times. Life is cheap and people have become indifferent. We all know the nazis were cruel but Hassel's books brings a new level of darkness with some black humour too. Definitely anti war.

Diehard Sven Hassel fan

This strikes me as an honest book from an author who has kept to the brutal truth mostly.

I first read this in my 20s and now 30+ years later still appreciate reading about the horrendous events on the Eastern Front.

No niceties, just the reality of war

Why oh why couldn’t they have used Rupert Degas as the narrator? Listened to this while painting my garden fence and periodically paused the book to watch the paint dry

Classic war story destroyed by monotone narration

One of Sven’s best books made utterly dull by possible the worst narrator of a book that I’ve ever had the misfortune to listen to.
They really should have stuck with Rupert Degas.

An excellent story, ruined by a robot narrator

I love Sven Hassel books, I read them in my youth and was excited when years later I found them on audible, however who employed this lifeless muppet to read them, no emotion just the same monotonous, monotone voice! I made one chapter I removed it from my device, so glad I only paid a quid for it, after listening to Guy Sayer “Forgotten soldier” which was amazing so disappointed, read the books guys don’t waste the credit 😳

Narrator is bloody awful
