Summary

When recovering drug addict Lyle Pickering is found dead of an overdose, it looks like a tragic accident. But his sister Rochelle knows better, and so does Lieutenant Eve Dallas. Lyle was murdered, and the evidence points directly to his old street gang.

Great story, as usual. I don't know what has happened with the audio editing in this book, but compared with the previous books, the sound here is hollow, as if the ears are filled with cotton. No complaint on the narrator, Susan Ericksen is one of the best!

This is the latest in a long running series and the story for me appeared formulaic. A difficult juggling act for the author who wants to give long running fans what they want but perhaps at the expense of any real surprises. This reminds me of the late great Robert b Parker, his dialogue was always sublime but whose plotting could sometimes appear perfunctory. I keep reading though which is perhaps the point but I really do wish that J D Robb would shake things up a bit.

My heart breaks for Rochelle and Crack, they have both suffered so much in the past, and for Crack especially, the loss of a sibling in such a violent and unexpected way is ....crushing and brings unwelcome memories.
But as the case continues and the number of bodies increases the case also hits a little to close for Eve too, her past returns to haunt her at the most inconvenient times. Which frustrates Eve and worries Roarke, but both make her more determined to stand for these victims and claim justice for them....she should never be underestimated. Especially by the gang leaders who usually manage to evade the cops and prosecution, but evading Eve, Roarke and Peabody is never going to be as easy as evading any other cop.
This is another tough case that will take you on an emotional rollercoaster alongside our favourite cast of characters.

Fabulous as always!

I own all of the In Death titles, and have listened to each of them dozens of times. They are my go-to entertainment, and can guarantee that Dallas's New York is irresistible.

This book isn't as complex as many others, and there aren't the surprises or twists we usually enjoy , which was a bit disappointing, but the characters are as reliable and attractive as ever. As always, Susan Ericksen's narration is perfect.

But UK listeners - anyone outside the US - can't enter competition so don't bother counting the bells throughout the story. It's a shame, but probably to be expected. Would have appreciated to be told from the beginning though!

There is a formula to the Eve Dallas novels, expected patterns of behaviour and expected outcomes. That doesn't mean that the story isn't enjoyable, in fact it's predictability is one of the things that makes these novels so successful. We know that Eve is going to be irritable, Roarke will have women swooning, while Peabody and McNab remain the cute young couple of kick ass detectives. It's a formula that, on the whole, works.
I enjoyed this novel as I've enjoyed it's predecessors. It isn't complicated or particularly deep, it's a comforting read where the good guys beat the bad guys and life continues on.
While I do enjoy Susan Erikson's audio performance for the most part, there is one element that continues to grate; the attempt at an Irish accent for Roarke. At times it morphs into Scottish, even hints of Welsh and an underlying American twang. As someone who lives in an area with a reasonable number of Irish accents - from all over the Emerald Isle - it has been interesting to see what native Irish friends have thought. The overall opinion hasn't been high. However I will say that if you can get past the Roarke accent, then the rest of the performance is a good standard and an enjoyable listen.
