About this listen

A century after it first appeared, Crime and Punishment remains one of the most gripping psychological thrillers. A poverty-stricken young man, seeing his family making sacrifices for him, is faced with an opportunity to solve his financial problems with one simple but horrifying act: the murder of a pawnbroker. She is, he feels, just a parasite on society. But does the end justify the means? Rodion Romanovitch Raskolnikov makes his decision and then has to live with it. Dostoyevsky, in masterly fashion, contrasts the comedy and tragedy of life in St. Petersburg with the anguish and turmoil of Raskolnikov's inner life.

Halfway through I had to find a synopsis to understand where the story was going. Once that was clear, I could relax and enjoy the precise descriptions and tantalising conversations. Each character consistently recognisable and beautifully voiced .

10 wondrous words for one.

The storytelling was incredibly effective in concealing the underlying philosophical arguments of Dostoyevsky so as to prevent them becoming obvious and therefore making the story itself superfluous. Gregory presented the book very well, pronouncing the difficult names simply and using voices which distinguished each character. Excellent book, and a great classic.

Inspirational and riveting argument against Nihilism

this isn't a book for those new to audiobooks or Russian novels. it took nearly 4 hours to build momentum and even after it felt like it was going around in circles.

saying that, it's a brilliant novel from characters to pacing. highly recommended

actually finished it.

Dostoyevsky was truly a most gifted author. This is, by far, the best book I've ever gone through!

I thought heading was optional?

This classic is as relevant as ever, in these troubled times! It deeply analyses complexities of human mind on its rational and psychological level. It is a challenging read hence having an audio version makes it very enjoyable and much easier. Loved every minute!
Constantine Gregory was a captivating reader although I imagined Raskolnikoff as a different character. But overall a great experience!👍👍👍

Beautifully written, complex and very deep!
