Summary

Often considered one of the first ever psychological thrillers, Crime and Punishment is a gripping tale of a poverty-stricken young man in Saint Petersburg, Russia, who hatches a plan to kill someone for money. Once the deed is done, he finds himself racked with guilt, confusion and disgust for his act.

In this new recording, Will Poulter (Detroit, Midsommar, The Maze Runner) gives new life to the troubled protagonist, Rodion Raskolnikov, in a performance that will have you questioning where we draw the line between right and wrong.

Crime and Punishment is a classic so no complaints. (Recommend Erwin Weil lectures once you’ve finished it). This is a Constance Garnett translation which is sort of the traditional and popular version. She’s quite neutral and translates many of her works in the same style so it’s not specifically in Dostoyévsky’s style but it’s definitely a safe bet. Sound quality is excellent and Will Poulter actually did better than I expected pronouncing difficult Russian names (Russian Speaker here). His reading is actually very easy to follow: perfect speed, he uses lots of different voices and accents consistently so it makes it really easy differentiate between characters. He’s almost eerily good at female voices. At times it is quite funny hearing a Russian character with a welsh accent though :) Overall I definitely recommend this version. Especially for a British English speaker it’s a game changer finding a non American audio book of such a classic. 🙈😅

Excellent reading

Amazing story that catches the inner deeper thoughts of not just a killer, but people in general and the weighty things that can play on your mind with the overwhelming guilt. Enjoyed it thoroughly! Will Poulter narrates the individual characters superbly.

Engrossed!

This book is gripping from start to finish, assisted by the wonderful performance of the reader. You are transported to 1800s St Petersburg and can truly envision life there through the eyes of the young and troubled Raskolnikov. Brilliant and will definitely also be buying the physical book for my personal library.

A fantastic work portrayed beautifully
