About this listen

Hannah Chadwick is running from her past, but she just stumbled into London’s most dangerous secret.

A fierce, professional nurse, Hannah found herself unfairly blacklisted after speaking out against corporate misconduct. Desperate for work, she takes the job at a nondescript clinic just off Harley Street, treating patients with "rare conditions" for an eccentric abclynician named Julius Wayworthy.

But this isn't a normal medical practice. Hidden throughout the city, their world is defined by a mysterious energy source lurking in the tunnels of London's Tube. These are the LineFolk: thousands of creatures—from elegant haemovores to monstrous shapeshifters—who use the city’s network to conceal their true forms.

When Hannah witnesses her colleague, Axton Flynn, violently transform to save her life during a mugging. She learns two terrifying truths: she is a human working in a world of monsters, and her predecessor was brutally murdered.

Now, caught between the LineFolk’s lethal secrets and the growing curiosity of the Police, Hannah must quickly decide who she can trust. Because if Wayworthy hired her for a reason, that reason might just get her killed.

Welcome to the Underground. Don't stray from the lines.

This book had me enthralled from start to finish. It reads like a Hollywood blockbuster. I listened to the audiobook version and I found myself retiring to bed early to close my eyes and slip into the world of the line folk of London, taking long walks round my village hoping not to see anyone I knew to avoid being wrenched from the captivating world that had been created for me. When I went into the London office this week, I found myself looking more closely at the faces of the ‘dwellers’ questioning their curious physiologies…Don’t hesitate, this book is brilliant!

Harry Potter for adults.

So many favourite things in one fantasy story but with the promise of more instalments - what's not to like? No spoilers except to say that this book features a menagerie of mythical beasts and introduces us to some wonderful characters with whom we feel familiar and yet maintaining the mystery of their secrets leaving the reader wanting to know more. Having read the Angel of Kings Cross novella, I knew I was going to love being drawn in to the underground world of the Linefolk of London and references to many places of my London days - it left me wanting to revisit these and look from another view. Sarah Edwards has done an absolute masterpiece of narration and giving a unique voice to each and every character from Hannah to The Countess and Ax and Mia. I can't wait to listen to her rich range of tones and find out what's next for the cast of characters in Book 2 - the ones that survive that is, because, of course, a murder mystery doesn't end well for all of them......

A mystery, the tube, a nurse, cats and more....
