Gene Woolworth had regularly visited his grandfather's remote Alaskan homestead since his childhood. Upon inheriting the property, it was a dream come true for him. An enthralling tale with hints of "weird fiction" somewhat akin to the works of Algernon Blackwood. Well written and moves along at a decent pace maintaining the listener's attention through intriguing plot developments. Stacey Krejci's narration is superb and at times gives you chills as the main character describes events. For what is essentially a novella this audiobook packs plenty into itself and is well worth a listen.

Maybe I have been listening to, too many action stories but this is not one of them. Its steady and enjoyable but I felt that the author was leaving bits out. I guess it is a short story but if they filled it out it could be a great novel. It, even for a short story was more of the bare bones. You get the story but so many jumps, one thing happened then next the result but no process as to why so it became to rushed and story was over before you really got to grips with what was actually happening. . The main character writes every thing down in his notebook and that is what I felt I was reading but nothing outside it. Especially when he says he learnt things from his Granddads old notebooks about his mum and grandma that he will not discuss here.

Not listened to anything else by this author so far so no idea if this is just the way he writes a short story, which is fine or how he writes in general. I do plan to listen to at least one other of their books, hopefully a longer one, as you might guess I am not a great fan of short stories but was intruded with the plot of this one and am glad I read i, just wish so much was not left out but then of course it not be a short story.

Overall you do get to know the outcome, which is brilliant.

The narrator was well spoken, the only thing that affected his performance was the quality of the recording. You could hear it but it was just oh so slightly muffled, I had to have the volume up a few notches more than usual so as to hear it. Not narrators fault, their voice itself was clear when I raised the volume and their tone was perfect thought, a technical one that seems to be slipping into a lot of audible recordings these past few years.

I was lucky to obtain this free in return for a review but would I have spent a credit or money on it, in all honesty no as I said I am not a fan of short stories so would never even have looked at it, which is a shame as it is a story to enjoy.

This is a very good short read, the characters are well defined and brought to life by a very good narrator. The storyline is interesting and keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout.
