About this listen

Bloomsbury presents Daughter of the Otherworld by Shauna Lawless, read by Clara Harte, Kevin Hely, Sam McArdle, Amy McAllister, and Gerry O'Brien.

From the author of the Gael Song trilogy, an epic new historical fantasy set in the tumultuous, magical world of medieval Ireland during the time of the Norman invasion.

Over a hundred years after she went missing, Isolde, born to the family of a famous Irish king and a powerful immortal, inexplicably reappears.

Her mother's kin, the Descendants, are one of the two magical races of Ireland. But no Descendant can understand the reasons for Isolde's disappearance, and worse yet, she is giftless – born with no magical ability, a dangerous thing when the magic-rich Fomorians, ancient enemies of the Descendants, are growing in strength.

The Fomorians no longer control any Irish kingdoms, but they still desire control over the mortal world. They seek to spread their dangerous webs wider by manipulating England’s Norman lords to invade Ireland.

Not yet eighteen, Isolde's world is about to change for ever. But when death and destruction seem inevitable, her true worth will show itself, for Isolde is far more than she seems.

I absolutely loved listening to Daughter of the Otherworld. As a huge fan of the original Gael Song trilogy, I went into this new book both excited and slightly nervous about the shift in characters and timeline — but Shauna Lawless completely pulled me back into the world.

What excites me most about this new trilogy is the opportunity to see more of the strength and power of the Descendants. In the original series we experienced so much darkness, loss, and the tragic fall of many of those characters. This new era feels like it could finally bring the Descendants more into centre stage, and I’m really hoping we see them truly step into their power.

I’m particularly drawn to Isolde as a character. Her motivations, her naivety about the wider world, and the internal conflict she carries make her fascinating to follow. I’m also really enjoying the complexity that’s building around her potential love story — it feels like it could develop into something really compelling over the course of the trilogy.

The audiobook narration was excellent. The new voice actors bring great energy to the characters — the voice for Isolde in particular is brilliant, and Broccán’s narration is fantastic as well. I do still miss Aoife McNamara’s portrayal of Gormflaith from the original audiobooks; that performance was unforgettable and remains one of my favourites. But I’m excited to hear more from the new cast as the series continues.

I’m also really hoping we get the return of Colmán’s voice actor and perhaps even more perspectives from different Descendant characters — as well as from our new Fomorian male lead.

Overall, this felt like a gripping and promising start to the next chapter of the Gael Song world. I’m completely hooked again and already impatient for the next book

Fantastic start to a new era of the Gael Song world

I loved this book just as much as the others.
I did miss some of the original characters but I soon got invested in the new additions.
Shauna writes so beautifully I get totally absorbed in this world so much so it ended before I even realised.
I cannot wait for the next one!!

Another great book!

I was a bit hesitant at first, given that its almost all new characters but I had no need to worry!

The story is set approximately 150 years later, but the key Fomorian players and some of the Descendants we knew are still alive.

I absolutely adore Isolde as a character. Her motivations and frustrations, her naivety about the world around her...

This was a great first book for the new era of Gael Song books and I cannot wait for the second!

Already waiting for the next book!
