About this listen

How does a pit crew change four wheels in 1.9 seconds?

And what does that mean for a company like Blackberry?

What is Ron Dennis' secret to good time management?

And how can that help TV producers?

Why is F1 the perfect example for leadership, motivation and strategy?

And what can we learn from it?

In The Winning Formula, driver, commentator and entrepreneur David Coulthard opens the doors to the secretive world of F1 and reveals in simple, entertaining and utterly compelling terms how he has been able to master this mind-boggling variety of disciplines by applying the skills honed from his years at the top of the world's most demanding motorsport.

By recounting his own stories and combining them with firsthand experience of stellar individuals such as Lewis Hamilton, Ron Dennis, Sir Frank Williams, Christian Horner and Sebastian Vettel, Coulthard provides a fascinating fly-on-the-wall insight into F1 but at the same time offers an invaluable guide to the business of sport and the sport of business.

I wasn't a fan of formula 1 but have a new found appreciation for the sport after reading this book. There's a huge amount of hard work, innovation, organization, communication required. there is also a need to build and develop good internal and external relationships. David also talks of the importance of building and maintaining your brand (individual or company). All of which are extremely important in business.

I also really enjoyed his perspective and approach to risk and some of the gestures he mentioned in his stories. I didn't know why I bought this book but , having learned a lot from it, am very glad that I did.

A Great Business Book

Brilliant, inspiring and down to earth. would encourage any budding sportsman or businessman to use this as a reference .

DC at his best

Pretty decent and reasonably entertaining explanation of basic but somewhat obvious principles for life as well as business. Beware, it is rather repetitive, but I guess that's to drive home the message.

Pretty obvious stuff

OK but a bit shallow and in spite of his insistence on being direct and to the point there is lots of waffle and repetition. How many times does he need to say "customer service". Neither a great insight into F1 nor ground-breaking views on business from a highly specialised and privileged position. Like most modern F1 drivers they are as much a product of their parents efforts along with a dollop of good fortune, as thier own achievements, yet rarely acknowledge this. Being a global sports star and multi millionaire does help a tad! Not dreadful but nothing too exciting. Bit like DC really.

Like DC in F1, went on a bit too long.

I felt that some of this book alienated a certain portion of the audience with its focus around executives and flights around the world.
the advice is sound and well laid out, with clear direction around what you need to do to bring success to yourself and your company.

A lot of the advice is common sense and purchased this book with an interest in F1 and how that logic is applied. I learnt new things, mostly about people.

I also learnt that Mr Coulthard is a little bit self obsessed from time to time (it feels like it anyway).
No one has the power or the right to take away from someone's achievements but in this case, he harps on about them in excess and it doesn't really add to the experience of the book.

All this said, I enjoyed the book, took away learning and formula one knowledge nuggets but I have also learnt that Mr Coulthard is very rich and was at McLaren F1 for about 8-10 years.

Well worth a listen.

A good book, slightly self indulgent
