About this listen

With her wedding to Hudson just months away, all Lovita's plans seem to be going awry. A crooked politician is running for mayor, his girlfriend is opening a new beauty shop in town, and the contractor building Sue Jan and Monroe's dream home is found dead, with Monroe the prime suspect. To top it all off, the money from the high school band's fundraiser has disappeared. Now the kids won't be able to go to New York City to march in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Before Lovita walks down the aisle, all the girls have to do is nail the real killer, find the missing money, save their beauty shop, and rescue the little town of Wachita. Can two big, bodaciously beautiful women do it? Piece of cake.

Any additional comments?

his is a fun book, not so much a mystery as a slice of life in small town Wachita, as seen through the eyes of joint beauty salon owner, Lovita May Horton, and her colleague and friend, Sue Jan.
Lovita is soon to be married and Sue is waiting for her dream house to be built whilst her husband is running for Mayor in the forthcoming elections. Two happy ladies. Until the body of the builder is found at the new, unfinished house, money goes missing and unwanted relatives arrive. The gregarious, chattering couple discuss all of the events with each other and most everyone else who will listen giving a delightful picture of the town and themselves.

I have to be honest - if this had been a print book I would probably not have bothered with it but when narrated by the marvellous Michelle Babb, whose deliciously warm voice, infused with a Texan accent, relates the story from Lovita's perspective, the whole thing becomes a delicious confection to enjoy. It is lightweight, funny and warmhearted, just the thing to bring out a smile on an overcast day. Read with humour and great characterisations, I loved it.

My thanks to the rights holder who gifted me, via Audiobook Boom, my copy of Dead as a Doornail, the third in the Until the Fat Ladies Sing mystery series. I became quite fond of the two main protagonists so think I might just go back to the earlier books which I have not heard simply to visit with them again. It is the characters as read by Ms.Babb, in all of their normalcy and idiosyncrasies, not the mystery itself, which made this such an enjoyable book

Linda Kozar writes beautifully constructed novels set today but harking back to those better times. The characters are a delight to know, inhabiting within a wonderful setting. There are several story threads intertwined, murder, small town politics, and a wedding. The dialogue sparkles and the book is lovingly narrated for the listeners delight.

Beautifully Written
