They thought the old man was harmless. Just another tramp found collapsed in an abandoned housing estate. At Northcote Hospital they put him in a bed and let him keep the strange old book he insisted on clutching.

Three friends working through the night at Northcote Hospital are about to experience the worst shift of their lives, trapped inside the building as creatures undreamed of in their worst nightmares begin to crawl from the walls in a bid to make the place their own.

Soon everyone and everything in Northcote Hospital will be changed. Will anyone be able to stop the evil worming its way through the building? Or will the horror escape to infect the planet?

John Llewellyn Probert's Dead Shift. Where the worst thing in this world is nothing compared to what's lurking just outside it.

An interesting story narrated well by Mr Chris Barnes. The storyline lends itself well to the horror genre with believable characters brought to life by the narration. Well worth a listen!

A great adventure into the abyss!

Ok, this is a lovecraftian horror story, with impossible ancient magic and otherworldly horrors. It's not too heavy on the gore considering the genre, but that works OK for the book. I also liked that this was a quick story with no illusions of grandeur, and helped me enjoy it. I really hope more stories did this.

Overall, I highly enjoyed it. Highly recommended.

I really enjoyed that!

This is a good little novella, a good story, weird but enjoyable, I was not so fond of the author's overuse of grandiose vocabulary my favourite peeves were friable and trepidant but there were many others. It does not stop the story being enjoyable though, and Mr. Barnes's narration was fabulous.

I was lucky enough to receive my copy free of charge in exchange for my honest review.

A good way to spend a few hours

In John Llewellyn Probert’s excellent novel, two universes collide together on one fateful night in one very unlucky hospital and it’s up to three overworked NHS employees to battle the horrors from beyond.

This book is truly the mashing together of different universes. In this tale, there’s a Lovecraftian horror core, mashed in with some 1980s video nasty body horror (think Cronenberg meets Hellraiser and you’re not far off), a central trio of heroes with more than a dash of the Shaun of the Deads about them and a dour and acerbically dry wit that’s straight out of the British psyche.

There’s also a beautiful coming together in Probert’s story and Barnes’ narration. Chris Barnes gives depth and gravitas to the horror while bringing out some of the great humour in the story.

Look, it’s action-packed, it’s horrifying, it’s funny. It’s like horror stories you used to know or what you thought horror stories were like but, at the same time, it’s a fresh and unique story all of its own.

Go buy it. Listen. Smile.
