Summary

In July 2011, the oil tanker Brillante Virtuoso was drifting through the treacherous Gulf of Aden when a crew of pirates attacked and set her ablaze in a devastating explosion. But when David Mockett, a maritime surveyor working for Lloyd's of London, inspected the damaged vessel, he was left with more questions than answers. Soon after his inspection, he was murdered.

Dead in the Water is a shocking expose of the criminal inner-workings of international shipping, an old-world industry at the backbone of our global economy. Through first-hand accounts of those who lived the hijacking—from members of the ship's crew and witnesses to the attacks, to the ex-London detectives turned private investigators seeking to solve Mockett's murder—award-winning reporters Matthew Campbell and Kit Chellel piece together the astounding truth behind one of the most brazen financial frauds in history.

The level of corruption on a grander scale is shocking but the book does a good job of bringing it back to the individuals and human cost. Well worth a listen and moves at a brusque pace.

Shocking

As the title says, this is a brilliantly written piece of investigative reporting which traces a fascinating subject across Europe and Africa. The voicing is perfect (documentary-esque.) It manages to be wholly factual whilst retaining an element of story telling and pace. A great read!

Great non-fiction writing on a par with Eric Schlosser

An excellent story very well told (except the volume ebbs and flows. It’s not as noticeable compared to some Audible books but is definitely there. I was pretty much gripped from the opening scenes. Documenting a particular investigation and tanker, its jaw dropping in its unveiling of how the criminal underworld is right there in plain sight. Well done on bringing to light a story 99% of people won’t know about.

No idea the corruption was this bad

Really enjoyed this gripping tale that spans the lawlessness of Yemen and Somalian pirates (maybe) to the workings of Lloyds of London. Written like a novel, well read and thoroughly gripping.

Excellent and gripping novel-like listen
