About this listen

The stunning new thriller set in wartime Berlin from the author of Blackout.

BERLIN. JANUARY 1941. Evil cannot bring about good . . .

After Germany's invasion of Poland, the world is holding its breath and hoping for peace. At home, the Nazi Party's hold on power is absolute.

One freezing night, an SS doctor and his wife return from an evening mingling with their fellow Nazis at the concert hall. By the time the sun rises, the doctor will be lying lifeless in a pool of blood.

Was it murder or suicide? Criminal Inspector Horst Schenke is told that under no circumstances should he investigate. The doctor's widow, however, is convinced her husband was the target of a hit. But why would anyone murder an apparently obscure doctor? Compelled to dig deeper, Schenke learns of the mysterious death of a child. The cases seem unconnected, but soon chilling links begin to emerge that point to a terrifying secret.

Even in times of war, under a ruthless regime, there are places in hell no man should ever enter. And Schenke fears he may not return alive . . .

Critic reviews

A compelling, atmospheric page-turner
Gripping and compelling . . . balances immersive historical scene-setting with masterful plotting
A superb thriller with all the elements that make for a seriously gripping story - an outsider hero in jeopardy, a world of brooding danger, and an entirely, terrifyingly believable denouement
A chilling and accomplished historical thriller
An absolute stone-cold page-turner
'Scarrow's second World War Two thriller is a tense and fast-paced tale rich in period atmosphere' (Bill Todd)
The moral ambiguity gives it a very especial edge. It is a tense, fast-moving story with plenty of action, culminating in a vividly described shoot-out (Edward James)
Scarrow has alighted on an aspect of Nazi policy that certainly deserves to be better known (James Owen)

The usual exciting story from Scarrow woven round the moral dilemmas of living under an authoritarian regime.

Simon Matthacks’s voice is silky smooth and he does a great job of giving each character an individual voice. Scarrow’s writing is skill full and the plot moves along at a nice pace. So why not 5 stars? I found myself it was over.

Very good but not brilliant

Great follow up to Blackout, Simon has created a character in Schenke that pulls you into his world. The reader portrays all characters in the audiobook with great skill and apparent ease. A very good book from one of the best storytellers in fiction. Well done Simon Scarrow. Look forward to more books from the author.
